After defending the Earth during the Reach Invasion, the Justice League takes the battle to the Reach's homeworld, after which they activate their secret weapon -- a series of cloaked satellites that encase the entire Solar System in a subspace bubble, sending it drifting through a wormhole to an unknown destination. The League is devastated, unable to trace the wormhole. As the Reach are taken into Green Lantern custody, they laugh and claim that if they can't have Earth, the League can't either.
As for the people actually on Earth, the bubble protects them from any tidal forces of moving, so nothing feels different, but anyone looking at the night sky would suddenly see the blackness replaced with swirling lights and colors. Before they get too far into the wormhole, Martian Manhunter is able to send in a very short psychic message to the League's sidekicks explaining what happened, and that is the last they ever heard of their former mentors.
After several days of panic and chaos due to the change, the swirling lights fade back to the normal night sky, although the constellations are completely alien to skywatchers beyond the planets within the Solar System -- these orbits remain unchanged.
The chaos does not end, though, so the sidekicks decide to step in and become the next Justice League, led by Nightwing and Superboy.
