I think of it this way...

It is possible to learn not to be a racist fuckwad. People do it every day.

It takes some people longer.

Some people never do it, but their vile crap can be countered here...vociferously.

And if they're here yelling into the void, they're not yelling at their wife or kids or dog and that's a good thing. I do think that the ability to be verbally vile can clear the slate for reality in a way that if there's no outlet, they'll just be vile at a real person.

Then again sometimes they're just racist fuckwads and ignore takes care of that.

You state you abhor it once.

Is it necessary that their behavior dictates yours or anybody else's? For instance, do you have to disagree with them each time, is ignoring them reasonable, and if so why?

What I see is people choosing to listen to or not listen to what they choose to listen to, which is also a tenet of free speech. You can say whatever you choose, that does not earn you respect. Free speech is practically limited in many institutions, school and jobs and otherwise.

The government allows it as a legal right and this board allows it with limitations as well.

There's nothing "the population" can do it about it, and some people choose to ignore the racists, some people choose to engage them, and some people choose to mock them, some choose to agree with them.

It has no actual power over them, and just as no amount of ranting from a racist will make me a racist, no amount of my ranting against them may result in making them not racist. I can have fun in the meantime, though, tearing up their "intellectual" arguments they use to defend an emotional position.
