Jumping into the fire ... Should the entire Non-Con category be eliminated?

Of course it normalizes reading it; that’s the difference between someone wanting to read something sexual, visiting Lit, and finding non-consent here, compared to them having to actively seek out something that might never have occurred to them, while having the awareness of breaking some societal norms by otherwise having to visit more obscure and potentially darker places
It’s being placed in the (erotica) mainstream
More are reading it, they’re doing so semi-visibly, and they’re discussing it
There are arguments for and against doing so, but it’s difficult to argue that it doesn’t normalize non-consent as erotica

Ok, so every piece of fiction (erotic or otherwise) shouldn't contain any acts of violence, drug use, stealing, jay-walking, etc. lest it be interpreted as encouraging them?

eta: actually, cross out "fiction" since presumably we shouldn't discuss that kind of stuff in non-fiction either for the same reason.

Maybe you should read what’s been written before you jump to knee-jerk offense
In fact, just seen some of your other comments, don’t bother, you’re clearly just wanting to troll

I’ve said it before and no doubt will say it again. What troubles me is stories that derive their thrill from hate rather than desire.

NonCon has problems for sure, but it’s a broad umbrella and Loving Wives is often just as bad. LW is arguably worse, because at least in NonCon people are aware that it’s a dark place. In LW, people can cheer for hatred under the shield of ‘Loving’.

Would your views change if the answer to any of these was definitely proven to be non Zero?

Of course not. Because the number is far far far closer to zero than it is to 100. I never said that it wasn't zero.

The thing is, that if you want to extent your argument, society would be coated in soft rubber and we would all be wrapped in bubble wrap. We would live like the matrix and there would be no freedom at all. A world controlled for our safety. Nothing is allowed. The only thing to threaten us is the law itself. There would be no new ideas. There would be no imagination. Someone might come up with a transgressive thought. Crush it out.

We are going to ban media to ensure that there are no copy-cat crimes. Copy-cat crimes do happen, but they are super rare. For every 1 killer/rapist out there inspired by a movie, there are millions of people who saw the same movie and did not have the slightest inkling to act anything out.

So I ask the same question, which no one ever goes near answering. They just huff and puff and talk around it. Want to ban stuff? Where do you draw your line?

Aside from anything else, think about what gets caught in the crossfire. When we ban NonCon, do we ban queer content as well, to protect all those poor under-25s from social contagion? Who will be the guardians of morality, and will anyone guard the guards?

Today's topic: "Let's pick on the Non-Con category because it "normalizes" thoughts of non-consensual behavior, possibly making more people think that's "normal."

Tomorrow's topic: Let's pick on another category for "normalizing" such thoughts and behavior. Pick one to pick on!

Anal
BDSM
Crossdressing
Erotic Horror
Exhibitionist & Voyeur
Fetish
Gay Male
Group Sex
Interracial Love
Lesbian Sex
Loving Wives (already beat to death so many times, but let's ban it)
Mature (because thinking of old folk and sex is just gross!)
Mind Control
NonHuman (who doesn't love their dog? But is that normal?)
Taboo/Incest
Toys & Masturbation (I mean, REALLY! Some of these toys are just getting weird, like the tentacle monster thing my wife hated, and I can't get a refund.)
Transgender

Let's stick to categories for just NORMAL stuff!

Thirty years I’ve longed for thee
I’ve worshipped from afar
Since just a lad of twenty-three
You’ve been my Northern Star

When Father left you - What a fool! -
I gladly took his place
But from respect I played it cool
In time I’ll win this race

My brothers rushed in one by one
To keep you warm at night
But they are gone now, I have won

I'm not a reader of rnc, or several other categories for that matter,
But,
This is a kink website that people visit to indulge their fantasies privately.

I know women who have rape fantasies (I'm not one of them). This doesn't mean they wish for it to happen irl, they just get some arousal from fantasizing about it.

It's only when one person or group decides that another person's harmless fun, is not harmless fun, that it becomes a problem.

Slavery was abusive and non consensual, absolutely horrible. Should we retroactively ban all of the award-winning literature that involves the subject? Or only those where a slave owner may have been interpreted as "glorified" for the sake of the story? Most of these stories include rape, as well.

I'm firmly against rape and slavery, but my feelings should have no bearing on what others can write about. I don't have to like what you say, to defend your right to say it.

That's Emily Dickinson, right?

I hesitate to speak up here for many obvious reasons, but...
Sexual non consent is rape....
It glorifies the sexual abuse of another human being regardless of their gender.
Taking another human being sexually against their wishes is rape... Non consensual sex is rape....
You can paint pretty flowers on it, but it doesn't change it... Rape... Is Rape...
Any attempts to portray it as anything else, is in my opinion... Bullshit...

So, should Non Con be banned???
In my opinion... Absolutely.

Rape isn't necessarily the same as reluctance or non-consent. CNC is a landmine of a fetish, but not the only one. I gather some people actually enjoy being the object of it. Real life CNC play has to make the consent explicit because that's how real people work, but in fiction, it's OK to be a little murkier. "Reluctance" is even broader, encompassing arranged marriage as someone has already said and "I consent to X but then Y also happened" and more things that real people deal with.

The site could tweak its rules about this stuff, people have already mentioned the publishing guidelines and here's a direct link, but I think eliminating the category would be going too far.
Ahh, the deflectors ... off topic ... whataboutists ....

If you want to discuss something else, start a thread for it.
If you're saying that Taboo/Incest is off-topic here, I disagree. It's more popular than R/NC by the numbers and roughly equally risky legally and morally. (I realize "roughly equally risky" is doing a lot of work. I could definitely pick out a T/I story that's more offensive than a certain R/NC story, and I could also do the reverse. I have no idea which one is more common or popular, but the point is, there's a lot of risky stuff in both of them.)

If any category gets outright removed, T/I is at risk, and with it, probably the plurality of Lit's readers and writers. Should Lit be OK with that? Personally I'd say no.
