OK, I watched the video. Hanoi Jane mentioned that she was asked to perform a skit about 'cunt,' Apparently as a part of the Vagina Monologues. However, they never got to the part about the vulgar slang word. Comment?

Jane Fonda Uses Vulgar Slang on Today

NEW YORK -- NBC News is apologizing again - this time for Jane Fonda. The 70-year-old actress used a vulgar slang term on the "Today" show Thursday while talking about the play "The Vagina Monologues." Fonda is appearing in a 10th-anniversary performance.

Fonda said she was asked to perform a monologue with the offensive word as the title. She said her reply was, "I don't think so. I've got enough problems."

About 10 minutes later, "Today" co-host Meredith Vieira told viewers that "Today" and Fonda apologized for the remark.

NBC has recently apologized for comments made by Chris Matthews and David Shuster.

shit I can think of worse!......she could have spoken about politics....stupid cunt whore dog nasty fucking twat she is...I swear I saw discharge and smelled a certain odor as she sat down..then the noise of squish and then she said the c word....thats what I saw and heard!

Well, OK. However, Shakespeare used the word cunt in at least two of his plays.

Jane Fonda Uses Vulgar Slang on Today

There's a time and a place for everything; unfortunately the "Today" show is neither the time nor the place for vulgar slang. Poor dumb Jane never was the sharpest knife in the drawer- and that's a bit of a handicap for someone as shrill and strident as loudmouth Jane.

I'm thinking a 70-year-old woman who has been in the business most of her life would know better. I bet it was intentional. She is an actress, after all.

i love to see the vitriolic hatred bubbling in the rightwing cauldron for so many decades! don't forget hillary's lesbian lover!

the _other_ guy's treason is always good for a few millions votes.

and it kinda makes life meaningful, doesn't it?

----

delicious irony: rightwing porn readers and writers objecting-- or agreeing with NBC's objection-- to a four letter word on TV! i know, it's to protect the delicate ears of the budding rugrat fascisti who might be listening.

Yeah, Jane Fonda gets vilified for decades for being ahead of her time--for basically being right during a time when must everyone else had their head up their "you know what." :)

Are you all out of your minds????

First..... Janet Jackson's nanosecond nipple and now Jane Fonda's one "cunt" and your sensitive little eyes are ears are mortified and insulted...

Give me a break..... Go sign onto Mitt's campaign against pornography which is causing all these "out of wedlock" (a fine, ironic phrase if there ever was one) babies and let the rest of us be....

Damn.... for a bunch of porn writers you certainly are sensitive buggers....

And yeah, what Pure said too.... The woman apologized for her youthful arrogance and naivety for being manipulated by the North Vietnamese (uhhh now called only "Vietnamese" and building Fords...) some 20 years ago....

It is a good thing the rest of us were never manipulated in our own youthful arrogance and naivety by LBJ and Tricky Dick in that fucked up abortion of a war , isn’t it? And Jane got that part right from the beginning....

In my neck of the woods there were a lot of families tuned in to the show this morning, watching for updates about school delays and closings.

That was a massively irresponsible thing to do.

I'm afraid I share what Keeblercrumb posted. Are some of you unaware that you are sitting here reading/posting to a publicly accessible pornographic site? Can we all say "hypocrite" together? And now can we all practice our horse laughs?

Waste of time!

*SIGH*

Well, first, R.R. I don't ever expect Jane Fonda to say anything, however benign, that doesn't stir-up controversy just because so many people hate. Hey, I ain't got no love for her, myself, but (and this is second) I DO object to you confusing the issue with your "Hanoi" Jane label. If you want to talk about an actress, ANY actress saying such a word during a television interview, than why not put it like that and we'll discuss it? Why bring in the Vietnam element which, you MUST have known would trigger anti-fonda responses instead of a real discussion on the subject?

If you want to gather the conservative wagons and have a roast of old liberals who ticked you off, by all means, go ahead. Just let us know that this is what you're after so that the rest of us don't waste or time thinking you were after serious thoughts and comments on an unrelated subject. Because when you create threads like this with the IMPLICATION that they're about one thing, but you make sure, with bias words and such, to turn them into something else, something you're gleefully and childishly after...well, that pisses me off. And it makes me think that none of your threads are worth reading, none of your posts worth responding to because you just want your agenda confirmed. You don't really want honest, thoughtful, considered comments.

You may well say you can't take the blame for how others respond. True enough. But your "Hanoi Jane" label was hardly objective. It was fuel and a match. You didn't want this to be JUST about what she said. You wanted this to be a rehash of old grievances. Which doesn't interest me at all. If it does you, then please say so, and those of us interested in the other topic won't bother with this dull and tired thread.

If there's any part of you that REALLY wants to discuss this word, however, then please answer these questions:

Are you asking for comments on Fonda saying a bad word deliberately on tv and if ANYONE should be allowed to do this, whatever the vulgar word may be? Or are you asking about the word itself and it's connotations? That is, are you asking women/men here if they feel offended that Fonda, a woman, used this word at all? Are you wondering if they're not offended because she's a woman saying it, but if a man had said it they would have taken offense? Are you asking if they can accept the word if it's used it as a term for a woman's private parts (as in the Monologues) as compared to using it to describe a type of woman ("she's a real c---")?

Removing the question of WHO this person is for a moment, imagining that it could have been ANY actress performing the Vagina Monologues, WHAT, exactly, is it that you're asking us to comment on? Or, if the fact that it's Fonda is important, are you asking if the word becomes less offensive if said by certain people, like a well-known actress--ANY well-known actress?

I think we all need to know these things in order to properly comment on it. That is IF you're interested in comments on it, and not wasting our time.

Isn't there a time delay on live shows? Didn't they bleep it? (They do on The View! :) )

Personally, I love the word cunt, and I firmly believe it should be liberated from it's verbal prison. Go Jane! And fuck the FCC :p

Way to go, Jane!

Lots of free publicity for the play. Anyone offended by "cunt" wouldn't want to see The Vagina Monologues anyway. Those that aren't offended now know that the play is on.

Look, she was talking about the play "The Vagina Monologues" and being asked to perform the monologue "Cunt", which is about reclaiming the word and making it empowering. Just like what Selena_Kitt said in her last comment.

Don't confuse the messenger with the message.

go trysail

try There's a time and a place for everything; unfortunately the "Today" show is neither the time nor the place for vulgar slang.

vulgarity here, too, has gotten out of hand. it's one thing to put c**t in a story for artistic purposes, and quite another to say it here and offend the authorial c**ts and d*ckwads who are just looking for a few f**king pleasant minutes off from their artistic endeavors.

Vigina Monologues? Sounds like a talking cunt! Oh. It's Jane Fonda, so it really is a talking cunt. :D

Most are quite tasty :p

Truly! :D

I have to agree with several of the comments here: anyone that claims offense at the word "cunt" on a board on THIS website wins the "biggest hypocrite since Pat Robertson" award. Also, this is the Vagina Monologues being talked about. (If you haven't seen it, it's an amazing show.) And the monologue "Cunt" is all about reclaiming the word.

And yes, I like the comment about Jane being ahead of her time. It's not like the peasantry hasn't been manipulated by Karl Rove and the like and they haven't got a clue about this at all, yet.

Would it've been any better if she'd said "pussy" on TV in this venue? I think not.

Americans can be such children.
