Graduate English Association

2007-2008 James Dickey Writing Awards

Call for Submissions
Deadline: 5 PM, Monday, April 21
(see guidelines below)

Throughout his life, James Dickey made clear his commitment to
literature. He believed that writing was the most valuable human
pursuit and that writers were more actively involved in living than
other people. Mr. Dickey*s achievement was not limited to one area:
he excelled as a poet, a novelist, and a critic.

Intended to commemorate the dedication and wide-ranging talent of James
Dickey, the awards are given in three fields (poetry, creative prose,
and scholarly writing) and are judged by English Department faculty.
Winners, to be announced on Graduate English Awards Day, will have their
names engraved on a plaque in the first-floor lounge and will receive
cash prizes.

Guidelines for submissions

The competition is open to graduate student members of the Graduate
English Association. You may join the GEA at the same time you submit
by including a $10 dues check made out to the Graduate English
Association.

Submissions should include the following:
a brief cover letter with the author*s name, title of submission, and
category (poetry, creative prose, or scholarly writing). Only one entry
per person per year is allowed. Winners from the previous year are
excluded from entering the same category in which they won.

Poetry: no more than 3 poems

Creative prose (fiction, creative non-fiction, drama): no more than 20
pages (12 point type, double spaced)

Scholarly writing: one paper of at least conference length (8 pages)
but not more than 25 pages (12 point type, double spaced)

Please submit three (3) copies of your work, typed and clipped together
in a manila envelope. To ensure blind judging, your name should appear
only on the cover sheet.

Address all submissions to Nicole Fisk (mailbox 133).

Deadline for submissions: 5 PM, Monday, April 21.
