I back up my music on disc but I'm wondering if there is a device thaat would allow me to save the entire itunes file so that I can easily move it to a new computer if the present crashes.

A flash drive would do it I think or an ipod. Also how many songs are we talking about?
Just make sure the files are .mp3

Either dropbox it or have an external harddrive. There are some that have a transfer option available.

Another option is to go into the shop and have them transfer it for you.

I recently brought a new laptop and asked the Computer shop if they could transfer my ituned from my old laptop to the new.

This they did, but when I asked the guy almost wept, as itunes is a 'nasty fucker' (quote) and has a lot of compatability issues.

It did work fine, and still does, but it took him a while to do it.

So, I'd advise taking it to a shop that specialises (not PC world or crap like that), and ask them to do it.

I've done this many times for many people, the external hard drive is the best. You can back up other items on it as well. Transfer is super easy. On your new computer open itunes, select import folder and then select the matching folder on your external hard drive. Then all you have to do is authorize the computer with itunes.

Now, as far as backing up the music on that hard drive, you can either do it through an automatic program (example timemachine for mac) or just periodically copy your itunesmusic folder from your hard drive to the external hard drive.

I'd also vote for an external hard drive. At the beginning of the year I bought a new laptop and had to copy all of my music / photos / videos etc and the EHD worked great. Just copy all of your stuff from time to time and you'll be set. :)

Thank you all. I had a computer crash on me and have lost an itunes collection and would hate to lose another.

After a couple of 'near run thing' experiences, I bought myself a 500GB StoreJet device. It's about half the size of a small paperback, and it's brilliant for both transferring and backing up.

I used to keep music on my ipod and then iDump it to a new computer. You can also just get an external harddrive. Either way a disc is better than having to redownload everything.
