You wanna learn how great a country is, you take a look at how they treat their poor and unfortunate. Right now we're doing an okay job of it, but we can do so much better.

Also, until you actually go on one of those programs, shut your mouth. How many people on welfare or food stamps have you talked to? And no, what Fox News tells you doesn't count. The vast majority of them are ashamed and feel less than human that they need to be in those programs to survive. But, unlike what people like you wish to convey, they're not lazy, they're not greedy, they're not a pox on society. They're nothing more than people who got left with no chair when the music stopped playing. They WANT to work, they want to work better jobs.

To the question of the thread:

They are more than a little worried. Their beliefs and biases are not being confirmed by the new generation of citizens and voters. They still look to the founders, men born three hundred years ago, for guidance and confirmation. They claim we are a center right country, but we have put the lie to that in the last two Presidential elections. They detest moderation and compromise. They are not mellowing with age, but getting bitter and cranky. And they believe all patriots hail from the right wing of the political spectrum. Even though there is no evidence whatsoever to support that contemptuous prejudice. They are an endangered species fighting for breaths of fresh air. But they will ban the EPA even as they struggle for those last few lungfuls of sweet mother oxygen.
