As Ricky Nelson once said:

‘You see, you can't please everyone
So you got to please yourself’

I just read the comments posted to one of my recent stories: ‘Wonderful tale’… ‘very good’… ‘nicely done’… ‘charming’… ‘engaging’… ‘very sweet’…

And then: ‘boring’.

Sorry, buster, but you seem to have been out-voted.

:D

But, to play devil's advocate...

The fact that a hundred readers loved it, doesn't change the fact that one reader was bored. Nothing shaming in that as the author - I've always found Jane Austen novels to be incredibly tedious and annoying, but I'm clearly in a minority. You can take pride in entertaining so many but it doesn't make that readers reaction invalid. (Though I hope they were reasonably courteous in their comment)

I agree with TheRedChamber. Being in the majority doesn't make one right. Nobody's viewpoint counts less than anyone else's. I think we've probably all seen the same thing. I've had stories where almost all the comments were positive, but there's almost always one or a few that are negative.

Readers are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get.

Such a commenter clearly has extremely discerning tastes, and as such it's a great compliment that they felt strongly enough to leave a comment. It's a good result!

That'd not what was being posted, I don't think. Being out of step with others who have commented doesn't have any claim to be right--just different. I think that there will be expressed differences is natural, though, and that there is no reason to then try to find the common denominator that pleases everyone. To the extent that would be possible, it would be called "pabulum."

I've had the same experience many times. Usually they're written by "anonymous" and I figure if he or she doesn't have the grit to put their name on the comment, I'm not obligated to give it much attention. I do pay attention to the negative comments that are signed, but they're few and far between. After a while, you'll develop a thick enough hide to ignore the few negative comments and bask in the good comments.

Comments are just opinions. Not everyone likes everything. If someone doesn't like one of my stories, they can move on, I don't care. I get mostly good reviews, so a bad one here and there is of no concern to me.

I agree. I just published a new story that had glowing comments, and respectable ratings 4.57. Then last night this guy simple says "One star if I ever saw one."

I'm rather new at writing, and my online experience, 35+ years, has taught me never to engage negating feedback. Does the same hold true for comments on your stories? This guy actually posted logged in. Either he's simply got the courage to be honest, or he's looking for a fight. What do you think?

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. Like Ricky Nelson, I have the casting vote!

:)
Good for you, and I agree. I don't really give a rats ass what anyone thinks but me. Not only do I get the deciding vote, I'm the ONLY vote.

I think the Fast & Furious movies are the stupidest things I've ever seen.

But they make billions of dollars and millions of people love them.

So what do i know, right?

I'm sure Vin Diesel cries himself to sleep every night on a massive pile of cash, upset about that one guy from Jersey who thinks his movies are shit.

I’m a big fan of the Fast and Furious movies, but yeah, they have imperfections. Biggest one- where’s the next one?

Two ways to look at it. The first is that it’s negative. The second is that it’s signed.

I’ll consider any comment, especially negative ones, because they offer me insight on how to improve my writing. (That’s provided that they aren’t just snarky, obscene or ad hominem drivel.) Positive ones give me my dopamine rush, but teach me little.

Signed ones generally get more attention from me, because somebody is stepping out from behind the veil. An exception, perhaps, might be from a named commenter with only one or two comments made, in which case I might suspect it’s Anon with lipstick.

Did they say anything but ‘one star’?

In any case, you’re under no obligation to respond unless you wish.

We live in a free world where it's possible to say what we think...
It is impossible to produce something everybody will love...
I receive plenty of negative comments on what I write. I accept that... I'm not vain or stupid enough to think everybody is going to enjoy one of my twisted stories...
I don't write for anybody but myself. It's always nice to get positive feedback, but just like we need night and day. We also need good and bad...
Accept that and move on... We are all entitled to our opinions... Remember, that's all comments are. Another human beings opinion...
If we are brave enough to think we're good enough, then we have to expect criticism... If you can't accept that, then perhaps we shouldn't post....
Just my opinion of course, and worth exactly what you paid for it...

Nope. His entire comment was "One star if I ever saw one."

Since everyone else seems to love the story, I think there's something in it he didn't like such as the short foot fetish section. Some people just don't appreciate a nice fetish.

It seems to me most negative comments I've gotten are about stupid shit.

The ones where they complain you didn't include X sex act are mildly annoying, but become merely funny when what they want is physically impossible.

Like I have a lady lying on her back. A gentleman kneels between her legs, bends down, and engages in cunnilingus. Our friend Anon complains that she didn't play with his cock at the same time. I admit to not being particularly flexible, but I can't see how that's doable without her being related to Mr Tickle...

I've seen a bunch of comments about what more 'she' should have done to 'him', but never vice versa. Is this more down to my stories (often female POV) or the sex of the commenter, I wonder?

Odd, to be sure. Well, every compass needle needs a butt end.

I once said a milf's breasts didn't sag like you'd expect, and some asshole sent me a whole paragraph about how ALL breasts sag no exceptions. I never said they didn't sag at all. WTF!

Isn't it nice knowing that you impacted someone so much they spent that time countering you? Even if it is proving you wrong? I don't know why but a little part of me thinks, "Ha, I own that tiny percentage of that guy's life now!"

Clearly said asshole has never watched an Ingrid Pitt film.
So, true. I've had my share of mature perky tits. Not so much anymore. Now I'm at the age I see gilf tits, but I've never had any tits I didn't enjoy no matter how perky or saggy.
