Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on Monday that securing the release of the Israeli captives held by Hamas was “not the most important goal” in its military campaign in Gaza. Also, once they release the hostages, the war is over. Until then, every single casualty on either side is the fault of Hamas.
“We have to say the truth, returning the hostages is not the most important thing, “ the far-right minister reportedly told Radio Galey Israel in an interview, according to The Times of Israel.
This was NEVER about the "hostages". Ever. The "hostages" were a fig leaf, Israel had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to destroy Gaza.
On October 8, 2024, the nation of Israel sacrificed its soul for political expediency and declared a "Mass Hannibal"
The "Hannibal Directive" was IDF military doctrine that has been used by Israel on and off since 1986. When a Hannibal Directive is called, Israeli soldiers are required to shoot at escaping enemy vehicles regardless of whether they are suspected of containing captured Israeli soldier hostages or not.
This directive was extremely unpopular with the Israeli civilian populace, and formally disavowed by the Israeli government back in 2016.
When Hamas began taking hostages on Israeli soil, Israel did the unthinkable and declared a Mass Hannibal.....which meant any and all soldiers and/or Israeli civilians being held hostage by escaping enemy vehicles were to be annihilated.
Drone operators, attack helicopter pilots and tank commanders were ordered to kill anything that moved that was heading towards the Gazan border. It appears quite a few IDF soldiers suffer from PTSD being ordered to kill their own citizens.
The Israel government briefly acknowledged that a "Mass Hannibal" had been called but basically claimed the ends justified the means.....and also they would not investigate this as it would be "too painful" for the Israeli public.\\
This begs an important question: If Israel doesn't give a damn about their own citizen's lives....why should we?
"Returning the hostages" was never a primary goal of Israel. Going forward, anytime anyone here says "but...but...the hostages!" I will simply reply that under the auspices of Israel's own Hannibal Directive, their lives were deemed expendable under Israeli decree.
