:( I wish I could give you a little brother, my darling, but that just wasn't in the cards we were dealt.

And little brothers grow up to be bigger and taller and very irritating as teenagers.

After that, they might improve - or not.

I've been washing Hebe, cup bearer to the Gods.

She was a very dirty girl, covered in sticky dust and cobwebs. I have cleaned her up before entering her in this week's local auction. She is about 16 inches (40 cm) high with very long delicate toes. Washing between her toes was the hardest part of getting her clean.

I hope she goes to a good home now she is no longer so dirty.

I'm no expert, but I think it is a Limenitis arthemis Astyanax – red-spotted purple or red-spotted admiral.

Thank you; it's beautiful.

What, Ogg, no picture of Hebe ?

I didn't want to take a picture of her looking dirty, and then she was wet, but she is something like this.

Unlike many versions of Hebe, my one is fully clothed.

Edited to add: I have a soft spot for Hebe as portrayed in Thorne Smith's 1931 novel The Night Life of the Gods:

It was made into a 1936 movie.

I have just finished my Bank Holiday Weekend evening beach clean. I pick up litter from about 200 metres of beach and the grass slopes behind the beach huts.

When I started doing it 15 or so years ago I would fill three or four black sacks. Now the beach is usually starts litter free because the beach hut owners do an organised beach clean before the season starts, I pick up fewer items after a 3-day weekend.

Last year I filled a single black sack. This evening all I had was a quarter-full sack.

When the beach is litter free when people arrive, they tend to leave it litter free when they leave. But the council's litter bins are usually overflowing by the end of a day. The contractors empty them at least daily from 1st May to 30th September and several times a week for the rest of the year. The road behind the beach is cleared of litter daily all year around.

But one family dumping their KFC or Big M litter out of their car window can mess it for everyone.

My ignore list has more names on it that usual. I think at least some of them are consecutive alts for the same GB poster who gets banned weekly.

But some previously reasonable but political posters seem to have become more aggressive recently, abusing any poster who doesn't share their extreme views.

Perhaps I should leave the GB alone for a while and actually finish some stories.

There are tim4es when I think I could lynch some of these so-called [assumed?] 'experts' at a local computer shop. A pal of mine has an old and much-loved laptop computer (running XP home, and with a 100Mb HDD). It's cluttered up with all manner of ancient [=unused] junk but it looked as if there was only 1Gb RAM and I reckoned that 2GB might be better.

The shop, after failing to meet the stated time ("come back at about 3pm") reckoned there was only 500K RAM and another stick might be obtained from foreign parts.
He's away on holiday, so the desperate need to use his machine is not there, so he let me 'have a look' to see if the problems are serious or not.

Imagine my surprise on discovering (after removing the memory stick cover) that it has 1Gb of DDR RAM not the 512Kb announced by the shop.

A local friend's half brother died in a car crash in Lincolnshire last night. He was 19, a passenger in a 20-year-old driver's car. The wreck was spotted by a passing motorist upside down against a tree.

The driver was dead at the scene. The half-brother was cut out of the car but died soon after arrival at hospital.

It's a waste of young lives and unfortunately happend far too often. Our friend is now with their mother as they try to cope with the news.

Sad, that.
We have a stretch of road running along the side of a local canal. All too often
there can be found fresh flowers and/or marks where the recovery vehicle has had to work.

Fucking Nadal was un-god-damn-believable. I cannot comprehend how it is possible to impart topspin like that to the rocket shots that Wawrinka was sending over the net.

Those two were just beating the crap out of the tennis ball.

Nadal's frickin' two-handed cross court backhand is mind-boggling. It is unreturnable.

I cannot comprehend why someone can be so dominant on one surface (clay) and not be able to translate that dominance to the other surfaces (hard or grass). It is, nevertheless, a fact. There's something not right about Nadal's 15 Grand Slam wins surpassing Sampras when 10 of those 15 wins come from Roland Garros. Sampras is (was), clearly, the better all-around player.

Nadal is (obviously) extraordinary in his own right. The athleticism speaks for itself. His ambidextrous ability, on the other hand, is a rarity (to say the least).

...There had been speculation for years about Johnson's relationship to that company [the "LBJ Company"]. Lady Bird had purchased one small radio station in 1943 for $17,500. Since then, thanks in part to a twenty-year-long string of strikingly favorable rulings by the Federal Communications Commission (which, among other aspects, had left Austin as one of the few metropolitan areas with only a single commercial television station), the company had burgeoned into a chain of immensely profitable radio and television stations the length of Texas, and by 1963 it owned as well 11,000 acres of ranchland and major shareholdings in nine Texas banks. Johnson had quieted the speculations by his unequivocal denials that there was any relationship. He had said, over and over, for twenty years, that the LBJ Company was entirely his wife's business and he had nothing to do with it; that, as he claimed in one of his many statements, "All that is owned by Mrs. Johnson....I don't have any interest in government-regulated industries and I never have had." But if Lyndon Johnson had no interest in the LBJ Company, why was it taking out insurance on his life? And, of course, his denials had omitted the salient fact. Texas was a community property state, and therefore since Lyndon Johnson had an interest— a half interest— in all the company's income, he had become rich. If Reynolds' statements became public, it would cast doubt on Johnson's claim that there was no connection between LBJ and the LBJ Company— and once that connection was established, the company's financial dealings would become a subject of journalistic inquiry. Johnson had arrived in Congress poor, and during his career had ostensibly had no source of income other than his government salary. He had been boasting to friends for years that he was a millionaire. By 1963, he, a man who had never held any job but his government positions— whose salary had never been more than $35,000 per year— was not merely a millionaire but a millionaire many times over...

..." 'Millionaire'— this was perhaps the first time that Johnson had ever been identified as such in print, at least in a national publication; he had perhaps never been identified in a national publication as a wealthy man, let alone a very wealthy man; for Life to do so, it must know something about his personal fortune that he had previously been able to keep hidden.

And, in fact, it did.

The magazine's investigative team had been working since the end of October [1963], and, during that time, say its leader, Associate Editor William Lambert, 'I began to pick up all these hints' about Lyndon Johnson, not merely about Johnson and his relationship with the newly rich Bobby Baker, but about Lyndon Johnson 'and the acquisition of his fortune.' Following up on hints, the team had found, in the words of Russell Sackett, one of its members and also an associate editor, that 'The deeper you got, the more serious they were; he was far richer than anyone had expected,' that he was, in fact, very rich indeed.

'I was very indignant,' Lambert said, and during the week of November 11 [1963], he had gone to the office of George P. Hunt, Life's managing editor, and said of Lyndon Johnson, 'This guy looks like a bandit to me.' Although 'bandit' is, of course, a synonym for 'robber' or 'thief,' Lambert didn't feel he was misusing the word. 'I felt that he had used public office to enhance his private wealth.' 'We're going to have to spend some money [to investigate]. I need some people, and a lot of time.' Johnson's entire financial picture should be looked into, he said. 'It was almost a net worth job, and you know that takes an enormous amount of time. I told Hunt, 'He's got a fortune, and he's been on the [public] payroll ever since he got out of college. And I don't know how he got it, but it's there.' By the time he went to see Hunt, Lambert was to recall, 'We knew he was a millionaire many times over."...

-Robert A. Caro
The Years of Lyndon Johnson: The Passage of Power
New York, N.Y. 2012.

This is an excerpt from the fourth volume of Robert A. Caro's monumental biography of the 36th President of the U.S.

I have read each volume as it emerged. With each and every volume, I have been more and more sickened and disgusted by Caro's revelations of Johnson's profound dishonesty.

The inescapable fact is that Lyndon Baines Johnson was a crook, a liar, a cheat, a thief and a blackmailer.

He cheated in every single election he ever entered— beginning as a student at obscure Southwest Texas State Teachers College— and he never stopped.

I was looking through my spam mail to see if any of the architectural firms that I have been applying to lately had been directed there by mistake. I saw an email with a bunch of user names from here also mailed in it. it was some spam link that doesn't go anywhere. Whatever. So I stop by here for the first time in months or a year or something.

Now I'm getting the same PM from the same user over and over again asking me to meetup and click another link.

How annoying.

Welcome back and report the spam PM's to Laurel. For a time, we had a rash of them but she has deleted most of the posters and all their posts.

Hey You! So great to see you! Welcome back. Hope life (other than spam) is treating you well.

I'm the redheaded stepchild at my office. I need to get out of there. But I also have 50% more money saved up than I ever have before. So I'm just applying to as many architectural firms as I can looking for work to move to Florida (because I never want to see snow again in my life).

A few days late, but...

A  from the good little witch.

Good luck. What's wrong with the fluffy white stuff? It's pretty.
