Well done. That guy is a jerk. Pit Bulls mostly suffer from their owners' need for machismo. The doggies themselves are big ol' teddy bears so long as they're treated well. Dobermans are the same way, though usually a bit on the dumb side.

Thanks. I sounds kinda dopey, but I'm really just trying to do what's right. I'm never going to be a huge fan of dogs, but I refuse to believe that pit bulls are without exception this vicious genetically predisposed attack dog breed that will kill me and eat my children.

Getting information has really helped me overcome my nervousness when it comes to dogs - I'd hate to think that some people might develop a fear because of what that guy kept talking about. I'm still wondering whether I should talk to someone at the Humane Society about what this guy keeps telling potential adopters. I feel awful just letting it happen.

He may just be following a political line. There are a bunch of cities and the entire country of the UK that are trying to make the breed illegal. It isn't the dogs' fault, it's the people!

I've owned pit bulls since way back in college (many, many years), and own one right now.

In my experience, they are the most loyal, most loving, and most protective of their children...out of all the breeds I've owned (and there's been a bunch - we always have at least one dog, usually more).

They're extremely intelligent, sensitive to their people's moods, and will die rather than let someone hurt you.

I've never had one turn on me, never had one bite me or any of my kids, and never had my house broken into while I owned one. The one I have now babysat an 18 month old during my son's birthday party last year: she wouldn't let anyone get rough with him, brought him toys, and let him pull her ears, poke her eyes, and drool all over her.

Absolutely wonderful dogs when they're raised with much love and respect.

Had a person looking to buy my old car today. Should know by Friday if he is willing to fork over some cash :D

Once again, I left it too late. Shit.

No point in regretting past mistakes. Learn and move on.

I just cut my hair off. Damn heat wave. I now have to go get it professionally finished tomorrow, but at least I'm cooler today! :D

The UK's legislation Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and amendments makes it illegal to own a pit bull or a dog that looks like a pit bull.

As legislation it is a dog's breakfast. It doesn't really control the dangerous OWNERS who can and do train any large breed to be a weapon.

I am contemplating doing the same thing. I just love it when you walk outside and the heat/humidity hit you in the face like a brick wall

A ponytail is your friend. *nods* Gets the hair off your neck and keeps you from regretting cutting it later on. Unless you just want a change of course, lol.

I had been contemplating it for some time. I just look better with shorter hair, I think. Plus it was pretty fried for the bottom five or six inches. Additionally, I am not one to fuss with my hair. So it was a ponytail or headband most of the time anyway. Long hair is more versatile and sexy, I know. I'd been wavering back and forth.

The meltdown yesterday and today made up my mind for me. CHOP I went from hair down to my bra strap to hair up to my earlobe! LOL

It was HARD to make that first cut. I'm glad it's done though. I'll post pics after the salon polishes me up.

I have missed the intelligent thought and conversations I find here, as well as the comradery. Sounds mildly strange to say about a porn bulletin board. Some people would not understand. Screw 'em.

Intelligent?

Sometimes, maybe.

Comradery?

You'll have amicus foaming at the mouth. "Comrades" are left-wing, communist, anti-Randian etc...

Still, he puts up with me. I put up with him.

Zeb's worse than amicus ever thought about being. And TE999 went from cool guy to rabid.

LOL Depends on the topic, to be sure. I stay out of the politics. I was thinking of a writing thread, a journal thread and another on cooking I've read recently. As for the usage of "comradery," I believe I spelled it incorrectly but I stand by the way I used it. :D

While I was tightening the nuts on the spare tire, it slipped off and hit me in the face.

... yeah, it sounds a lot cooler if I don't mention this part.

I'm not a fan of dogs, used to be really scared and I'm just now learning to be a bit more comfortable around them, but I've done a lot of research and I know that what he was saying was BS. Yes, Pitbulls are among the more aggressive breeds, but with a responsible owner and proper training, they do just fine. He was perpetuating myths, that's what really pissed me off. I kept asking whether he'd seen any research on the topic, and he just kept repeating "people say" and "I've heard" and "everyone knows". Especially in the middle of the Humane Society, I expected better.

I'm not a dog person either, but from what I understand about animals in general and particularly about dogs and cats, their behavior is largely dictated by how they're raised and treated, especially when they're still puppies and kittens.

Sorry about your eye and about Germany. *hugs*

Dogs will be territorial, more or less, depending on general breed characteristics. That doesn't mean that they won't be friendly away from the house . . . at least towards people. Two of my dogs, the terrorier and the beagle, rabidly hated other dogs but they're generally friendly. The terrorier even likes visiting the vet!

Awww. :)

That's what I've heard too from owners who know how to treat their pets. The stories I've heard where a pit bull attacked someone seemingly without provocation was either because it was raised improperly or was, in fact, provoked in some way. Oftentimes a combination of the two. But the attacks that do happen are so widely publicized and spun that it's easy to think for the uninformed pit bulls are naturally vicious creatures.

The terrorier likes visiting the vet? HOLY COW!!!

The thing is, when a pit bull, or a rottweiler, or a mastiff goes bad, they're beyond dangerous, since they are bred by humans to have massively powerful jaws, and tenacity in the fighting ring. We made them that way.

To be honest, not everyone can own a dog like that. They will take over and rule the house if you let them, but if you're enough of an Alpha to take the lead, then you really couldn't ask for a better pet, OR a better protector.

Now I can move on from being stressed out and panicky about how I'm going to pay for school next year, to being stressed out and panicky about what I'm going to do after graduation.

I love college. No, really.

I've given up so much to do this. Nobody even knows how much. I hope it's worth it.

I liked college so much I didn't want to ever leave. Then that little war got in the way . . .

Go get 'em Carson!
