Is there an eye doctor in the house?

I've had an infection in my eyes for 2 full weeks now. I wake up every morning with my eyes glued shut with goop. They are completely blood shot and the insides of the lids feel like sandpaper. They weep all day long.

I can't wear my contacts or eye makeup and it fucking hurts. I'm sick of it.

I went to my regular doctor when it first appeared, thinking it was pinkeye. She said it was viral but gave me the antibiotic drops for pinkeye anyway, saying it might give me some relief.

Well, there's been no fucking relief and I'm sick of it. Should I go to an ophthalmologist? Don't they have anti-viral drugs now that would kick it out of my system?

I'd go see an ophthalmologist...

If it's a virus it's EATING your eyeballs...

Hmmmmmmmmmm....

Did they give you gentamycin drops? My daughters both had it, then I had it....Clio's and my eyes were allergic to the anti-biotic.
Plus he gave us Patanol, after giving us a different drop for anti-biotic. Ask for a change of the anti-biotic and see what happens!

That's a pleasant thought. I think I will take your advice.

Suzi, I don't see why an antibiotic drop would help with a viral infection at all. That's like taking an oral antibiotic for a cold. How long did your family have it for?

Call up your regular doctor and see what he's got to say. He may want to visit with you and he may be able to give you more options. Or he may just send you to an opthamologist.

Don't they all have like on-call phone lines these days?

Muff, I've never tested this doctor's offices on-call response. I was going to wait until Tuesday. Think I should interrupt her holiday weekend?

It depends on how severe you think your eye problem is. If you are worried about it, then you have a legitimately good reason to call your doctor. If you think you'll be okay until Tuesday, then wait until then. Asking your doctor to return your call, rather than a visit, shouldn't be that much of a disruption to her.

It's subjective.

Thanks Emerald. I've had severe allergies for years and this is not related to that, I'm certain. This is like pinkeye on crack.

Colloidal silver might help. It won't hurt.

Sorry I didn't see this before, patient1. What is it, where can I get it and what does it do?

There are several kinds of conjunctivitis.

Crusty eyes, goop..yeah…ucky pink eye.

There is bacterial conjunctivitis and viral conjunctivitis..

With viral, the discharge is more clear…with the bacterial kind, it's much more gunky and greenish yellow.

You can't really tell which kind you have though, unless the doctor takes a culture.

But I do know that antibiotics will help with both kinds…because bacterial can very easily lead into a raging infection…anyway.

Plus, it likes to keep coming back around if you don't really treat it.

(I had pink eye a lot as a kid)

If you think you have conjunctivitis...get antibiotics soon as possible, K.

Another option would be to make a call to a eye doctor's office somewhere like LensCrafter's, which is normally open on Sundays, like in a mall. They are optometrists, not opthamologists, but they still might be able to offer you some ideas or assistance.

Hopefully they took a culture before you started antibiotics so they can know for sure if anything's growing in there.

Colloidal silver is an excellent idea. Being a weed junkie I would also suggest echinacea tincture(good for viruses as well as bacterial infection) three-four times a day and eye washes with eyebright. You can get loose eyebright cheap at a health food store and make a tea to use on your eyes. Calendula petals with the eyebright is a good combo. Load up on garlic in your diet.

Taking the wrong antibiotics can be harmful as well as a waste.....make sure they culture!

It's something that was used to treat infections 85 years ago, before anti-biotics were discovered. Think of it as powdered sterling silver, with a negative electrical charge. It's suspended in distilled water by the particles repelling each other. Today, it's inexpensive to manufacture, but at the time of discovery, it was cheaper & easier to culture bread mold into pennecillin. It normally comes in a dark glass bottle with an eye-dropper.

I've never seen it at Wall-Mart or GNC. It's more common among network marketing organizations than retail outlets. Try someplace or someone that has nutritional supplements, or alternative medicines.

Colloidal silver has it's adherents that claim it treats any infection- bacterial, viral, fungal, mold, yeast, etc. It also has detractors that say it doesn't work & want it banned. People that drink it every day to prevent infection can turn their skin gray, just like people that overuse beta-carotene can turn their skin orange. It's very safe. You can put it in a baby's eyes.

I've used it on a lot of various infections with good results.

To be more objective about it, being a solution of charged particles, it may be very much like saline solutions, which, afterall, are used to sterilize cotacts, treat sore throats, and as nasal sprays safely & effectively.. I honestly never did a controled experiment with one eye or nostril on saline & the other with silver, but I think it works at least as well.

Maybe you want to ask your pharmicist or doctor about a saline eyewash meant for contact wearers, at least for the holiday.

I'd bet on conjunctivitis. My neice and 2 nephews currently have it and it sounds exactly the same. They have eye drops and orals and are getting better, but they have to be really careful about touching their eyes because it's highly contageous and they have 11 brothers sisters and cousins to spread it too.
The goo seems to be the worse of it. Just don't go wrenching your eyes open or goodbye lashes. Warm water, but I'm sure you've figured that out.
I'm actually suprised with the goo your Doc didn't think of it, except that it isn't common in adults.
Goodluck Ruby.

Amazing AV as always by the way.

I could pee in your eyes. Don't know if it would help, but it does with the jellyfish stings. :)

Patient1, my eyes hurt like hell, but I've decided to wait until Tuesday and then find an ophthalmologist and beg for a same-day appointment.

Sunstruck, I don't think it's conjunctivitis. I've had pinkeye before and it goes away in like a day with those drops. I've had this two weeks and have been using the drops the whole time with no improvement.

Riff, I'm almost willing to try anything at this point. Almost.

Ruby

do me a favor.. can you lighten that up a bit and repost it? It's to dark for me to see.

wait.. nevermind.. I can do it myself

OMG Ruby, Please go to the doc ASAP.

It's gross, isn't it?

Gawd, I feel so hot and sexy right now.

It did look better last week, after I had my contacts out for 5 straight days. This is after trying to wear my lenses again for a day.
