where i live, there is no top 40 radio station anymore. do they even still have those? i listen to an oldies station that plays 60's/70's and sometimes a station that plays 40's/50's. the songs still sound pretty good and i know that a lot of them are still showing up. but, it got me to thinking....i can't imagine anyone in 50 years saying, "i'd like to do a song that was first done by 50 cent (or eminem or take your pick). even other performers in the same genre don't make cover versions.
so, they've killed the royalties market for their music, too. it seems like the only thing that still sounds like rock and roll is the current country music, pop music is totally gone. there are no longer popular songs from broadway shows. where are the rodgers and hart of the 21st century?

I think the lines are blurring between genres. I like Country but half the time they sound like pop songs to me....sometimes they rap. My kids are driving me crazy with the Broadway musical music to Dear Evan Hansen. I think there's just a lot of alternatives. It isn't like when I grow up and you couldn't wait to hear the top 40. That was a long time ago.....when you used to save your money to buy a 45. Lol

As far as radio stations go, yes. It's effectively dead. The last "rock" station in my area recently converted to Christian music/programming.

Even in places like NYC real rock stations are dying out. In my recent travels around the country (by car), when I've been in range of large cities, rarely have I found a station which plays rock music, and what they play is generally from the 80s.

AM radio went to niche programming (news and sports talk, NPR, Christian, etc) when rock listeners went to FM. Now with the rise of streaming services, you're seeing the same thing happen with FM. Younger millennials and post-millennials have never seen radio as the place to discover new music.

The reason country and classic rock (as opposed to stations that play new rock) are still hanging on is that their listeners are in demographics less likely to be into Spotify et al.

I think you’re right about that...my son is a radio DJ on a Top 40station in the mid west...I hope it’s not a totally dead genre before he gets old enough to host classic rock...or switch to News or Sports, which rules the AM airwaves. Personally, I still love radio, but admit to dabbling in its less commercial outlets.

I don't thing the music is dead, but the old delivery methods are on their last breaths.

As for not covering Emenim or 50 Cent, I think thats good. I hate that music is the only art form where nicking someone else's music is not only allowed, but often pays more. Can you imagine going to a comedy club and seeing someone do Chris Rock's bits? They'd get thrown the fuck out. Yet in any town the cover band make MORE and plays more often than the original acts.

Rock is well on the internet.

Metal is killin' it too.

Pop?? That lame shit is still around doing the 2:45 cookie cutter re-hashed garbage over and over with a new beefcake/pair of tits pushing it.

Yep. There's nothing worth listening to on the radio. I find new music online and stream it. If I really like it, I'll buy a CD or a download. I'll only listen to the radio on my commute for the traffic reports.

Sirus XM.

There is every kind of Rock Station you could ever want!

Country rap alright which we refer to in a shorthand fashion as crap.

Seriously....Outkast is close to country as rap can get without going bad.

The radio generally speaking is shit indeed.

I got rid of all my DVD's and CD's and went digital a few years back and haven't missed that giant pile of shit in my life at all.

While I realize some people like their collections, if you're not in love with yours going digital is a real sq.ft saver.

Sirus isn't bad! My friend has it and it's not bad...he also drives a LOT more than I do so. If I spent more time in the truck I'd deff consider getting some XM to spoon feed me new material.

Sirus XM is outrageously high dollar in some cases true.

BUT!

For an extra $25.00 a year you can get it on the computer or phone and then satellite radios to take anywhere are not that high

Also, the internet has plenty of Rock stations for free
