Is Robot sex possible?

I began writing a novel about a man who ignores his beautiful wife while he builds a life like robot for a science club. The robot begins to develope a personality and begins to seduce his wife. Is this a fantasy of the readers?

Not a fantasy of mine, but it sounds like a cool story I would like to read.

One of my earliest submitted stories was about Robotic Sex. Nothing kinky - I mean sex between two robots.

Submitted it to Asimov's SF Magazine. They didn't buy it, but George Scithers sent a totally original rejection letter. Quite extensive criticism, though it didn't stick to the point. His facts were off, too. My parents HAD been introduced.

Apropos to nothing:

I just received a spam flyer from "Fredericks Of Hollywood" advertising latex tights. 60 % Off!
They call it their "BLOWOUT SALE!"

Laughed? I thought my pants would never dry!

Damppanties I hope you read this story. I want to get your feedback. Ch 1 is at my editors office and should be posted next weekend.

qqn, I searched for your story on Lit but couldn't find it. Give a link or mail it to me, I'd be happy to see it.

robot sex

On that latex pants sale at Frederick's - stand back, Quasi.

Thanks for a laugh.

The idea of robot sex brings up the question of free will. Assuming the robot can only execute programming, the seduction is an extension of the husband's will. That would make an interesting twist for a "Loving Wives" story.

Maybe someone with more SF experience can solve the free will aspect. I would like to read the story.

Robotic Free Will.

Axeltheswede,

Asimov's robot stories usually had "Robotic Free Will" as either a bug in the computer (Positronic Brain) or a conflict in the operating system ( Three Rules of Robotics ).

Come to think of it, a conflict in program commands is how they exonerated Hal 2000 in the sequel to "2001: A Space Odyssey."

Take a command like: "Do whatever it takes to keep Mrs. Blank happy."
Then, let the robot discover that Mrs. Blank is feeling sexually neglected.
From there, the robot has no "Free Will", but it IS following orders in an unusual direction.

:) Write On!

robot sex

I think qqnforyou6 has his answer. There is interest in the original idea at the start of this thread.

The story has some intriguing possiblities. Write it yourself, or get together with an experienced SF writer. I add my vote to those wanting to see the story done.

The idea of robot sex was discussed at length in Asimov's "The Robots of Dawn". That was hardly the only thing the book was about, but it was a significant part of the plot. In this case, the robot in question was "humaniform" meaning that it was an android, precisely human in appearance (and male). Obviously, that made sex a simple matter. The robot was totally subservient, although it was intelligent enough to be somewhat creative, its "desires" had entirely to do with pleasing its human female partner.

In a sense, we already have sex with machines: vibrators, dolls, the kinky stuff you see in porn movies. Doing a robot is just a matter of degree.

Humaniform Robots or Robtic Humanoids?

The idea of a robot running amuck and providing sexual gratification, requires a giant leap of faith that, before this "accident" takes place, some company will not have marketed one for that precise reason.

As pointed out, we already have artificial surrogates. It's just that they haven't been developed to a stage beyond the point where they are merely a tool. They require a tremendous amount of fantasy output by the user.

Nor do I expect robots to fill the niche created by inflatable sex partners. I usually see a more sinister landscape, when looking into my crystal ball.

I see ....

The workforce of a large multinational corporation has a "health' examination that must be passed before the potential employee can be hired. Part of that examination, includes a minor bit of surgery, to install an implant. [ Possibly masked as a hands-free corporate cell phone.]

This surgery is to install an implant that controls the employee's ability to have an orgasm. On the one hand, when the employee has completed an onerous task, he is rewarded with an orgasm. [It could be via electro-stimulation of the brain's pleasure centres - see Larry Niven's "Wiretapper" stories - or through the release of select hormones.]

It need not only work as a reward, but could also function as a damper, to eliminate the employee's ability to have a natural orgasm. Thereby, making the employee more dependant upon the employers for gratification. Since it works on an electro-chemical level, the sexual orientation of the employee would be inconsequential.

The most interesting feature of this dystopian society, would be that its effects would be most onerously felt by the male employees. Female employees, especially more inhibited female employees, may discover a totally new range of (erotic) sensations, after signing on with one of these multinationals.

In this future, the robots having sex are human robots.

I believe that is closer to Karl Capek's original concept, when he coined the term, in 1925.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If anyone is interested. No. I will not be writing any story based upon this premise. I have written enough dystopian stories already.

You may take it, or any part of it, gratis.

Seems like the idea is a reversal of the "Stepford Wives" movie. The building of the "perfect" partner for his wife. My question is why is he building the robot for his wife?

It's an intriguing idea. I like SciFi myself and like the erotic twist, sounds very appealing. Although I prefer Erotic Couples and Romance, this could be an avenue I might want to venture into in the future.

Thanks for some ideas and for the post.

I don't know which movie you're thinking of, but the best "robot sex" movie scenario I know of is:

from: http://www.sffa.com/fotl/fotl_archives/loop043.html

Cherry 2000 (1987)

This is an hysterically fun escapist movie set in the far future where all appliances are being recycled and the perfect mate is a sex robot. At least it is for the men. They don't get into the male sex robots. Too bad.

Sam Treadwell (David Andrews) is ecstatically happy with his Cherry 2000 model (Pamela Gidley). Why wouldn't he be? No complaining...just complying! Cherry has so many different meanings and they all apply here. However, Sam loses his dream girl when she goes through a total meltdown on the kitchen floor while being submerged in soapy dish water and she is wearing those hideous yellow rubber gloves! They are making love at this time and the sparks are not the kind that Sam wanted. He is left with just her chip and now he needs a new Cherry 2000 chassis. These are not that easy to find.
...

Just remembered this film:

Demon Seed
(1977 - Horror Sci-Fi)

[ Plot Summary from IMDb.com ]

Scientist Alex Harris (Fritz Weaver), doing research on artificial intelligence, is working on a special kind of computer. This computer grows more and more powerful, and succeeds in raping the scientist's wife, Susan Harris (Julie Christie).
In the end she gives birth to a hybrid baby.

Hmmmm... there are already some pretty advanced fuck machines out there in the thousand dollar range. I understand the Sybian is the best.
Asimov has a story based on robot sex, and there was a movie recently (sorry, the name escapes me) that had some seriously lovely robot women who had amazing sexual abilities. (Talk about your ultimate submissive!)

Hey! Write it. Open all our minds!

;)

metal n' plastic robot or organic robot...

There are a couple of really cool ideas being tossed about here - just thought I'd add my 2¢.

There have been lots of films and books about robot sex (heck, the first that comes to mind is Blade Runner, what with the Replicants and the Darryl Hannah model being built for sex), but usually just as mindless participants, just as happy to have sex as they are to clean the house...or work in a mine, for that matter.

What about an organic robot, though? Sure, you could program a robot to enjoy sex, but wouldn't it be easier and more realistic (to the robot ant the partner) if parts of it were organic and actually COULD enjoy sex? Now, this leads into the idea of cyborgs having sex with each other purely for pleasure, but whatever...

...hmmm, I seem to have gone on to a mindless ramble...ah, well. Robot Sex Cool is what I think I really wanted to say.

Bicentennial Man

Robin Williams as a robot who becomes more and more complex over the course of 200 years...eventually adding the capabilities of sexual enjoyment...okay, so it was a little wonky and not quite as sexually charging as 'Demon Seed', but yes Viginia Robots do want sex!

"Demon Seed" was originally a book by Dean Koontz. He revised it a couple years ago ... no, rewrote it, basically; it's hardly the same book anymore ... but both make for entertaining reads (the first's better, IMO). The movie turns up now and again on the Sci Fi channel; I caught part of it the other night.

I had a bit of fun writing an android sex ST:TNG fanfic in which the boys from Engineering build Data a woman for his birthday ... does that count? ;)

Can't see why not, unless you had Data rejected her. Then it would be Robot Non Sex.

BTW: Add to the list of movies "Making Mr. Right."

Nerdy Scientist makes android (in own image) to withstand the loneliness of deep space travel. To get public support - and funds - behind project, they hire a female PR agent to "sell" the idea to the public. Because of similarity between scientist and android, female PR agent - and her dippy friends - get the creator and creation confused. Hilarity ensues.

Well, not really hilarity, mildly humorous flick, follows.
