• The Daily Mail is a far right newspaper that engages in pretty horrendous attack pieces against a variety of people including royals, immigrants, etc and is very often having to apologise and pay for its actions
• It is an unreliable source and that’s why people with some modicum of intelligence ignore it
• The royal family has changed its internal policies since Diana, which has caused some in the media to attack them more
• The photograph in question was edited in very minor ways, that any person in Britain probably would have done
• It’s an open secret that Kate has been unwell for some time
• Conspiracy theories are borne out of a lack of information, the princess under UK law is still allowed her privacy
• Princess Diana died in a tragic accident outside of the protection of the British govt/police force/royal family. Again, conspiracy theories abound in a vaccum

I don't follow the English news, but I quick-sourced the Daily Mail as it came up first in my search on Mother's Day information for England. That's why I used the link to point out that Mother's Day was not in May as gxnn stated in her post.

In America we would refer that type of news as 'tabloid' or 'rag' news - news that is dubious.

Understandably, after major surgery, Kate would choose to isolate during recovery. People, for whatever their reasons, tend to draw the darkest inferences about others and speculate a person out of the light must be very ill or even suggest death—just busybodies. Tabloids mostly sell papers based on readers' morbid fascinations - not factual things like headlines telling the truth.

Not quite true, we are “self regulating” through the press association and, legally, claimants against newspapers regularly have to go through the legal system to get redress, rather than the body set up to provide guidance actually do anything meaningful.
