Trying to improve here and found this brilliant saved thread titled Writer's Advice posted in 2005 on the AH. Here is a line of advice I found:

Cut inverted diction and eschew passive voice. Otherwise your brilliant editor will write "Yoda!" in the margins. God bless him.

I understand passive voice, but don't know what 'inverted diction' is. I did a google search and could only find an incomprehensible linquistics text that referenced it.

I'm sure I do it all the time, I must since I haven't a clue what he's talking about. BTW, that saved thread is awesome -- if somewhat intimitdating!

I have brought my question to the master writer's here in EF.

Thanks.

Here's an example :)

Knowledgeable you will be, if listening to me you are. ;)

Ah, that's interesting. I'd never heard of "inverted diction" before either.

Always thought an "inverted dick" is the end result of a male sex-change operation.

See the example quoted by Lady C.

Not in anything of yours that I have read.

That should be "writers" Plural not possessive.

God.

I saw it, but was too lazy to change. Should have known better. Every single thing I post needs an edit!

Don't let the grammar glitches Strunk you out. Yoda lived 900 years and he got gigs in four or five of the Star Wars movies. :D

ooh I didn't know what "inverted diction" was!

Passive voice.... a few years ago I got a job with an organisation that rewrote complicated legal stuff in plainer English. Its published mission statement included this -

"Wherever possible, the active voice will be used".
