Instead Softcups

Wow

who knew there were alternatives to the Keeper? Wow! If I could figure out the conversion from pounds to dollars I'd consider the mooncup next time, too!

Neat!

It's the same thing as the keeper, just made from a different material.

Ladies, I've just been converted! I ordered my Keeper a few weeks ago and just finished my first cycle - amazing!

A panty liner on the two heavy days when I was learning proper placement did the trick. No leaking, a little trace seepage on those two heavy days, but I think that was mostly figuring out the right position. After that, it was perfect! I didn't use a single tampon - two unopened boxes in the bathroom are gathering dust even as we speak.

It does take getting used to, and it's not for you if are squeamish...verrrry interested though if you're not. Why are our bodies always such a surprise? Where's our owner's manual???

And the color of the cup is just too awful! I just ordered the Divacup, mostly for the color and the silicone might be a touch softer and more flexible.

One tip though - long fingernails are not a good idea when learning how to work this little baby.

Great stuff, ladies! Give it a whirl.

Another convert! :)

Yep! That's why I'm intrigued... sometimes I think the gum rubber keeper smells weird. Be interested to try one in silicone or whatever. Thanks again for the intro to the Keeper, Chey! Happy New Years!

You're welcome, and same to you.

By the way, you can boil the Keeper if you want to sterilize it. Any odor would have to be coming from it not being clean, I think. Don't forget to clean out the little tiny pin prick size holes along the edge. Those are sneaky at first, but you have to remember them.

I'm not sure, but I think that the rubber might have an odd odor to it... or maybe it's just my mind projecting the weird color onto another sense... or maybe it needs a good boiling. I dunno. :)

ditto.

I still use it, and am quite a happy customer. I think I will upgrade (or re-upgrade, as I once owned one but as I mentioned left it at an ex's house) to the DivaCup at some point just to get rid of the creepy brown color.

All these latex objects change color. My diagphragm changed from an almost-white to a deep dolls-flesh sort of color. It's not like you're going to see it while it's in use...

Yeah, I guess it's not that big of a deal. I've been using the Keeper (and the Diva Cup before it) for over a year now.

Just think of all the money I've saved by not buying plugs and rags... just gimme my nice little scary-brown-colored cup any day!

Hi Cheyenne! 4 years huh? Well done you!!! :D

But come on ladies... surely someone has managed to use the Softcups successfully...... havent they???

I bought a box of Instead one year ago and it is still sitting in the hall closet. I opened the first one and knew there was no way in hell I could get it inside of me. I had a normal birth 22 years ago and can remember being quite a bit bigger inside for years, but not any more.

I bought them because I'm getting irregular in my old age... skipping cycles every other month or so. The first time I skipped I had the period from hell, soaking through super plus tampons at a rate of one per hour for 4 or 5 days straight, then it finally tapered down. Haven't experienced the same flow since then after skipping, but tying a big bucket between my legs would have been more effective than all the tampons that I went through that month. I had hoped the Softcups would have been the answer for the heavy cycles, but like I said, they're unusable for me due to their size.

The Diva cup looks like it might fit better than the huge ring on the Softcups, so I may give it a try. My 13 year old daughter is using tampons now, I'm easily putting out $15.00 - 20.00 a month between the two of us.

Question 1: Has anyone ordered a Diva Cup and found it too large while following their guidelines of one size for women who have had a vaginal birth, and another size for those who have not given birth?

Question 2: Would having a tipped uterus make it impossible to use the cups, since the cups might not sit or seal properly in a slightly slanted position?

Hi, Arden -

I've been told by a couple of obgyns that I have a tipped uterus, & I use the keeper. Once in a while there is a tiny bit of leakage, but I blame me for not quite having it in right right, or maybe I need to buy the next size bigger. I've never had kids, but I am gonna be 28 this year, so I'm approaching that recommended age for buying the bigger size. I don't know about the diva cup, but the Keeper offers a money back guarantee w/in three cycles if you are not satisfied. Good luck!

the huge ring on the Softcups

Huge ring? I don't get it. The rings weren't as big as the ring on my Gasket. That's why the slipped and slid around in there and leaked all over the place for me.

I also have, according to the "down there" doc, a tipped uterus, and have occasional leakage problems. However, as I mentioned way back a ways, I only have leakage problems at night if I sleep curled up on my side, and not always even then. I just use non-disposable pads (Glad Rags brand, but am considering trying my hand at sewing myself a set...) at night JUST IN CASE.

All in all, way prefer it to plugs or disposable rags, minor night problems and all.

Thanks, watergirl, perhaps I have some hope with using it after all.

ethicalslut: That's exactly how I sleep because of neck problems, can't do my back or stomach. I am glad to know that I might (or might not) expect some leakage because of this though. Thanks for sharing.

SlickTony, are you saying that the outer ring on the Diva and Keeper are larger than those on the Softcups? They appeared smaller from the photographs supplied on the websites. If they're bigger than the Softcup rings, then I may be SOL. Crap.

Oh, dear, didn't mean to sow confusion. No, I meant that the ring on the Softcups was not as big as the ring in my diaphragm. The diaphragm fits behind the pubic bone, and that's the way it stays in. Wasn't the Instead meant to sort of fit over the cervix? Whatever it was meant to do, it just kind of slid around, and I ended up making a terrible mess.

question of size?

Lately (past two or three cycles) I am noticing more leakage with the keeper than I originally did, & I've had it for over a year. I've never had kids, but I will be 28 next month. I see they recommend a bigger cup for those over 30, and wonder - should I order the bigger one? I'm gonna get the mooncup this time, I like the clear better than the dark rubber.

Any quick advice?

edited to add, I just ordered the bigger size - can't hurt, and i'll want it in a year or two anyways!
