OK.. kinda revisiting this thread since the topic last came up a few months ago.

I managed to get my little paws on Softcups online and was eagerly anticipating using them. I read the instructions... watched the video and was all ready for action when the time came!! :D

I had no problem inserting one and was delighted when I couldnt feel it once it was "in". So off I went.. already mentally converted from ever using tampons again!!! :nana:

BUT.... after a few hours..... disasters strikes. Major leak!!!! Decided that it was just bad luck and tried again. The same thing.. very comfortable... but then another major leak.

It seems that I could move about no problem at all... but if I sneezed, went to the loo or even farted  , the damn thing slips and leaks.

What am I doing wrong? I have looked up their website.... and I am still convinced I have put it in right. I would hate for them not to work for me because I really do like the idea of them and hate using tampons. Are you supposed to be able to feel it with your finger btw when its in place???

Can anyone help me out??? Pleeeaseeee!!!

No clue, hon - I have the wrong kind of plumbing!

But I DID notice in the "getting used to birth control" thread that some birth control methods stop menstrual bleeding entirely. Could this possibly help you?

There is also the most awesome thread in The Blank Manual about all the different kinds of leak catchers. Check in the female section.

Simple solution!

http://www.thekeeper.com

Skip the consistent spending $ on leaky softcups and try a keeper.

I got one ages ago, $30+shipping or so, and it is KICK ASS. Comfy, does not leak (ok, it might leak a teeny bit once or twice if you don't have it in right, but you'll get the hang of it.)

Do a search here on lit for mad amounts of testimonials.

insteads...

I have tried the insteads and my period is always heavy. I like that you don't have to change it as much, but I still wear a pad with it, cos' it can spill. I grab it on the edge and slowly pull. Never heard of that "keeper" tho. Good luck with it!:)

Thanks for that zhukov..... but I have been down that road once and would never go down it again. Deprovera is not the way forwards.

Besides... we are trying for a baby... so I need to stay regular!! ;)

I had a look at the site.. thanks a mill Watergirl! It looks hideous.... laughing... but could be worth a shot. The only thing is it still mentions leaking as par for the course, and suggests pads as well... but that is the whole reason I was trying the softcups.. to get away from tampons or pads!

It seriously looks like the end of a toilet plunger. Rather frightening, if you ask me. I've tried the Instead cups, and had the same issues with leakage. I just gave in and went back to tampons and panty liners (need both, since it's heavy). Maybe someday they'll come along with a better solution...

RFLMAO!!!!! :D You described it exactly Lynxi!!!! Thats just brilliant!!!! :p :D

Hmmmm... so you have leakage too huh? I was soo convinced that perhaps it was just something I was doing wrong.... especially as they really highlight the non-leaking issue as being being a huge bonus. In fact the promotional videa claims for there to be no leakage at all once you get used to it!!! Hmmpphhh..... not such a wonderful invention after all!

hey there again Watergirl! :rose:

I am reading the second thread you put up a link to... and am chuckling away here to myself at some of the posts!!! Only us women could talk about such stuff as "pussy farts" to each other!!!

I still think the Keeper looks like a toilet plunger... and the colour is gross.... but maybe it is worth a try.

The only thing is I ordered a 3 box supply of Softcups online and with posting and shipping etc (I live in Ireland), they cost about $60. I feel I want to give them a damn good try before I decide against them for good! And there still seems to be leakage probs with The Keeper! *sigh*.. the things us girls have to put up with!

Nice to meet you btw

hmmm

Hi, again, Saoirse - pretty name, btw - does it mean something?

I've had the keeper for ages, like 2 years, and had teeny leakage maybe 4 or 5 times in 2 years, which I figure is pretty damn cool.
I remember that someone on lit, not sure who, said that she just bought herself some red panties & wears them on the days she's worried about any leakage! <grin>

I talked one of my best girlfriends into trying the Keeper, & she is a convert. She's in her residency to be a pediatrician, and says that when she gets stuck on weird shifts at the hospital, like 16 hour days & such, she LOVES not having to pack a big bag full of tampons/pads etc.

I swim with it in, I climb up & down ladders for work, I go hiking, I feel like an infomercial. Really, it kicks ass. I understand about spending a chunk of $$ on the instead cups - wowsers! Now I just look at the price of tampons and smirk.

Yeah... I do hear you!!! And maybe it will be worth my while trying to buy it online. Like you I hate tampons and havent worn pads in many many years.

What I loved about the information available on Softcups and what I read here in Lit was that you can do your normal physical stuff and carry on with life with no risk of leaks.... plus the added benefit of not having to suffer chaffing, discomfort etc from dry, wrongly inserted tampons.

I bought 3 boxes of Softcups about 6 weeks ago online (cos they are not available here)... was away with my hubby for a few days. Went for a walk along a competely deserted beach... and I just got this "sinking" feeling.... major leak!!! Luckily I had brought tampons with me... so there I am trying to hide behind a sand dune... and fish this softcup out.... looking like I have been involved in a massacre!!! Hubby was brilliant and helped in the general clean up operation... but crikey, I wasnt pleased and my jeans were ruined!!!! The same thing happened next time I tried it.. luckily I was at home.. but even still.... I now dont feel like I trust them! I sure as hell wont be wearing white trousers while wearing one!!! :p

Oh.. and Saoirse is an Irish name... it means Freedom... and is pronounced Seersha. But my friends here call me Sao.. much easier!!!!

egad~

Wow, ohmigod, I would be MORTIFIED - holy smokes jeans ruined is major badness. I can just imagine what you mean. The keeper... Trust me, it really suctions itself around your cervix. You have to pinch it at the bottom & pull to take it out - no accidental coming loose. The whole name 'soft cups' always worried me - sounds like lack of structrual integrity (and boy does that sound weird, I know) - but - it just sounded messy coming out. Like a plastic baggy full of blood. Nope nope.
How big is a softcup? I'm just scratchin my head over them.

Laughing.. yeah I know what you mean!!! Emmm.. the soft cup is maybe about 2-3 inches in diameter... the rim is made of durable plastic the same as is used for baby bottle nipples and stuff.. and the cup is made from some sort of non-irritating plastic too. Here is the link for them..... http://www.softcup.com

When you squeeze the rim of it it is no bigger than a tampon applicator... and in fairness I found it very easy to insert.

It just seems to "slip" when inside after a while..... and that seems to be where the problems arise. For me anywhere!

And dont worry .. the jeans were rescuable after a good wash!!!

Here is a link to the 'menstrual hut' thread, which is a funny read, and relevant:

and, here's a link to the way back when thread about the Keeper, started by Cheyenne, who ought to be getting commission on some of their sales:

good luck, ladies.

Wow, has it been more than 4 years since I bought the Keeper? I guess so!

Yup, I'd still recommend it in a heart beat.

Hi Cheyenne! 4 years huh? Well done you!!! :D

But come on ladies... surely someone has managed to use the Softcups successfully...... havent they???

Nope, not I. They are MUCH messier than the Keeper and they leak! I still have the original box of Instead that I bought 4 years ago sitting in the bathroom closet. I really should toss the rest of them out, they just take up room.

*mutters loudly about 3 brand new unopened boxes of softcups in my bathroom*

*Giving myself and this topic a well aimed KICCCKKKKKKKKKKK back up to the top of the pile*!!!!! :D

I tried the Instead Softcups, they didn't work for me. I had leakage too. The only woman I've known to have good luck w/ Softcups is entitled.

Haven't picked up the Keeper yet, but am going to. May be a good investment 'cause I'm going to be student teaching in January.

My ex of four years swore by Instead and only had one accident that I knew of. This was how we learned - never have sex with them in and expect them to work

Seriously, somehow she had very good luck with them, so I would not give up hope.

Stiffy...

PS - And damn, stay away from Depro - it is some evil shit. An ex gf used it, had periods once every three months, and was constantly doubled over in pain crying fo r3 days each period. Monkeying with your hormones is just something i cannot support - which is why I got fixed :D

I strongly suspect that the problem with the "Softcups" is that they are not a good fit.

Every woman is "sized" slightly differently from others, when my wife got her first diaphragm the gyno inserted several different sizes before prescribing one. She often used it during her period when we had sex. Used it one night and forgot about it, two days later it Finlay began to leak.

If the softcup is too small or too big it will leak because it will shift with movement. One size does NOT fit all.

Just noticed that I am logged on as my wife, my comp. died and am using hers.
