In Texas, an Emerging Problem for Democrats on the Border.

ZAPATA, Texas — Democrats spent years focusing on how they could finally win Texas. But since Tuesday’s election, they have been wrestling with a more pressing question: How did they lose Zapata County?

In the reliably Democratic and majority-Hispanic stronghold of South Texas, Zapata County, population 14,179, had never been a political bellwether. It is a largely rural border community on a narrow stretch of the Rio Grande between Laredo and McAllen, home to oil-field workers and one of the highest poverty rates in Texas.

It's true, Texas is a big, diverse state and one size does not fit all. There was also probably a sense that Trump's open racism and xenophobia would hurt him among Hispanic voters who are legal immigrants or native-born, and whatever the reason, it didn't.

Well.

They want the same thing everyone else does...

"Everyone else" does not want the same thing. That's part of the problem.

I thought it was interesting that the Cubans in Miami said they worried about socialism, while the Mexican-Americans in South Texas said they appreciated getting stimulus checks with Trump's name on them; i.e. free stuff from the government.

The amount of threads fgv has been making is in direct correlation to the amount of votes Trump lost by.

You are right about that... more and more.

Else we would not be here today.

Everyone knows it's only "socialism" when it goes to someone else. When I get it, it's because I'm a hardworking American who never got nothing from nobody and I deserve the help now.

Yelling at clouds...posting conservative drivel on an erotic story site... At least it keeps him happy.

That was one of the biggest surprises of this election cycle: The Latinx vote in Texas has been traditionally deep blue Democratic, usually between 65 to 75 percent. It wobbled a bit down to something like 63 percent for Hillary, which was considered an aberration at the time (glass ceiling?)...but in 2020 the five biggest border counties with Mexico saw the Latinx vote plunge down to 45% Democratic.

I'm hoping pollsters do a deep dive on that one because it was completely unexpected.

Sometimes the first folks up the ladder just have to pull it up behind them. Trump has spent the past five years hammering on illegal immigration, and we're talking about legal immigrants and natural-born Americans who don't want to be associated with the riffraff Trump has been whining about.

Also, even before the election I heard complaints that the Biden campaign wasn't bringing in any Latinx surrogates to reach out.

in america, an emerging problem for republicans and--especially--trump: how did they manage to LOSE the election to someone they're saying is too old, too sleepy, too far into dementia, not fit for the presidency, corrupt, stupid, sleazy, money-launderer?

i mean, just HOW did they lose?

we all know how, and it's not because of any damned fraudulent voting.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

No worries.

They are STILL counting votes...

Today I learned that they count the blind votes last. They need Braille readers and the ballots are 100(!!!) pages long!

In 2016, I went to vote and the woman behind me in line was blind...the poll workers all lit up like it was Christmas morning..."this is what we've trained for!"....

Yes, and the more they count, the bigger Biden's lead gets everywhere except Arizona (where they are rapidly running out of votes to count).

Arizona announced this morning the Maricopa county ballot count (aka Trump's last chance) will be at 8 pm Central time. Ten minutes to go!

Edit: 6500 more ballots counted....Biden's lead decreases by....drum roll....140 votes.

Trump needs to win 61% of the remaining ballots....every day it's been the same, between 49 and 51%. Basically a wash.
