Hey y'all...

I have an iMac, new to me and still getting used to using it, and i've noticed today that my scrolling ball in the mouse will scroll up, but not down. I checked the mouse preferences and it's already set to scroll up and down, and I've tried restarting my mac just to see if that would do something...

Any ideas out there? I'd greatly appreciate any help....:rose:

time for a new mouse

Do you have one of the Mighty Mice (with the little scroll ball on top)?

try using an alcohol swab. turn the mouse upside down and roll the ball over the swab a few times. it might work for awhile, but might not. if it doesn't do it long term, time to buy a new one

Yes...it's a mighty mouse...

I've tried cleaning it the way they recommend...it actually rolls fine, rolls smoothly in fact, it's just that when scrolling on a page, it will scroll down, and not back up.

We just bought this iMac brand new 1 month ago, it better not need a new mouse, lol!:D

Well, good grief...lol, I just realized in my original post i got the problem backwards. It scrolls down, and not back up. Sorry.....

I'm such a dork sometimes...:D

+1

Additionally, you do not need a mouse sold by Apple, any generic USB mouse will work. I saw some cheap $ 9.99 mouse at Home Depot or Lowes. Also, a local salvage place got a bunch of iMacs and I picked up an Apple USB optical mouse for by iBook laptop for just under 10 bucks (I was going for matching color/style), if you wish I could go by and see if they have anymore left.

this is a rather common problem with keyboards and mice. I have purchased several over the years that only work for a few months then kick out. That is why I buy from where I do because they always give me a no questions asked return policy.

It's fine now, everyone. I don't know what exactly fixed it, but I had to reboot my mac and my router earlier today...maybe that did it. Dunno...but it's scrolling up and down perfectly fine now. Yay! :D

Thank you all for your very helpful suggestions.
