illustrated story help?

i sent an illustrated story as a word document on the file uploader thingie (was too big a file to use regular submission form) and apparently the pics didn't show up for them? how do i fix?
maybe i'm technologically inept but am i not putting the pics into the document correctly? i dragged and dropped the picture files from my computer into the document, and they showed up in the document -for me-, but apparently not otherwise. do i need to put them in another way and if so how?
if it's relevant i'm using openoffice because i'm too cheap to get word for realsies, but i'm saving it in the word file format from openoffice.
