The following is from an article about English Doctor Mortimer Granville, the inventor of the vibrator back in the late 1800's when women diagnosed with "hysteria" went to the doctor for "pulsation" treatments.

<<<At the height of his worldwide fame, Sigmund Freud sought to discredit medical masturbation, but by then many women viewed doctors as an unnecessary intermediary. Vibrators were soon offered in the Sears Roebuck catalogue, but with the advent of motion pictures came pornographic films, and when men realized how these machines were being used by women, vibrators were withdrawn from ordinary commercial distribution and even outlawed in many areas. In 1952, more than half a century after Dr Granville's death, the American Psychiatric Association concluded that female hysteria was a myth, not a disease. The sale of vibrators for sexual purposes remains illegal in many nations, and in the American states of Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Texas, and Virginia. In 2007 the US Supreme Court declined to hear a case questioning the Constitutionality of such prohibitions, leaving these laws in effect. >>>

I found it amazing that vibrators are actually illegal in some states, particularly some like Massachusetts that are considered to be "liberal" and educated. Is this really true? Who out there is from one of these states, and to your knowledge is it actually illegal to buy a "sexual vibrator" or vibrating dildo?

Ah but masturbations wasnt banned, and self gratification has always been through out history a self fulling passtime, so they found other ways, and other tools.

I don't know this for certain, but this may explain why these products are marketed and sold as "personal massagers" in some markets.

Notice how many sex toys use animal imagery of some kind, i.e. the rabbit. That's because that turns it into a legal novelty toy, instead of an illegal sex toy.
