"Lipstick on a Pig" has been moved off center stage as full coverage has been diverted to Hurricane Ike as it approaches the Texas coast.

I choose to point out that local authorities in Texas, 'first responders', as they are called, at the city, country and state level are making preparations and issuing warnings and 'FEMA', the federal government, is pretty much in the background, as it should be.

The 'media' is there in full force, of course, as they were during Katrina, even asshole Geraldo Rivera turned his back on the ocean and got knocked on his ass, I think I hurt myself laughing.

The oil industry has already warned of shortages and price increases as 20 percent of the nations gasoline is refined in the Galveston, Houston area, let us see if the media rolls out the price gouging accusations against the industry this time around.

The industry has also informed the consuming public of offshore rigs on onshore facilities being shut down in preparation for the storm, as they did prior to Katrina, but no one noticed.

While the Mayor of New Orleans strutted and pomped and talked the talk, as did the Governor of Louisiana, who hindered efforts by Red Cross agencies and federal assistance, the politicians and people of Texas, perhaps with knowledge gained from Katrina, are on the job in full force.

As Bush was already hated by the left for 'stealing' the previous two elections, it was easy for the media to bash Bush and Fema for what was then the largest natural disaster to visit the US in modern times, it was really the laxity of Louisiana official and the ignorance of the population of New Orleans that led to the true disaster that was Katrina.

As I write this, "Ike" is still several hours offshore and even the precise landfall is not yet determined, but I thought, as I watch, of the similarity of events and wonder when the left and the media that represents them, will weigh in with the propaganda.

They will, just wait and see..

No, Ami. This is a God event, not politics, not media. I don't recall anyone critcising ahead of Katrina, they criticised the emergency response and the words of the Bush family in the wake of the disaster. As usual, you want to hang it on the lefties. As usual, you are wrong.

Would you just like to confirm that you didn't mean 'Black People' in the sentence of yours I highlighted.

Since the vast majority of those who stayed, over 90 percent, as I recall, were black, draw your own conclusion, I thought it was self evident from the coverage.

oh... so you did mean Black people...

Is Galvaston mostly White? Just curious.

By the way, the USA's worst hurricane struck Galveston in 1900 killing some 6,000 people.

Bush put a former professional horse trainer in charge of FEMA.

Can you say cronyism boys and girls? I knew you could!

Granted, the local New Orleans gov't wasn't ready, and TX learned a LOT from what happened in Katrina. The whole country did. Every coastal city is much more prepared than they were before Katrina.

But if a local gov't fails in any serious emergency situation, the federal gov't and FEMA have a responsibility to step in and save the day. It's what FEMA was created for.

And they dropped the ball during Katrina. Big time.

Selena, like it or not this is America, the land of the free and the brave and the federal government is not authorized to 'step in and save the day', permission must be given in a timely manner and help asked for.

You know this, of course, but instead, prefer to blame Bush, thas okay, I understand, but you were wrong then and you are wrong now.

When England suffered its worst modern flood in 1953, US troops stationed in East Anglia used all their resources to help evacuate and save people stranded by the flood water.

No one had to ask them and no UK government agency had to authorise them. The US troops just dropped everything and came. One of the heroes was a very tall PFC who had borrowed a survival suit. He risked his life many times that night and had to be held back from attempting yet another search for survivors when he was completely exhausted.

We owe him, and the rest of the US troops there at the time, our enduring thanks.

George Medal awards

Two US servicemen (neither of them the one with the survival suit) were awarded George Medals, the UK's highest bravery award, for their rescue work during the 1953 floods:

Reis Leming, and
Freeman Kilpatrick

Freeman Kilpatrick's wife hasn't forgiven him yet. He was supposed to take her out that night but he went to warn and evacuate the neighbours BEFORE rescuing her, the kids and their babysitter. They sat on the floating roof of their house for many hours.

The USAF didn't let him wear the award until after he had retired.
