I watched the movie- (a long, long time ago) but, I have forgotten what is was about....

" However, drifting ice stations are not lasting as long as anticipated. As the ice melts,
a time-tested way of studying it is becoming more difficult to carry out."

We are doomed! We don't have Rock Hudson to defend them any more.

I saw Ice Station Zebra in the theaters. All I remember is McHale from McHale's Navy was the bad guy and the oh-so-cool (for the time) shot of the submarine busting through the ice pack to surface.

And natural gas. I have read several referencces to this in Arctic related stories but am unsure whether it involves proven reserves or is just speculation.

It has been a while, but it was a story once...

I think you are right on that. References I have seen seem to assume the fact without discussing the point at all.
In any case there are ongoing discussions between the US, Canada, Denmark (Greenland), Norway and Russia to resolve exact borders in the area. A rather rough enviornment for oil rigs though.

They are going to have to pay well...

I see a new reality show in the making. Hillbilly Ice Fishin'...

:D
