I was wondering if I could get some hair advice.....I know, not earth shattering...

Coming from someone who had waist length hair and then cut it up to my ears, I would say that it's a really tough call. If your hair is something that you're really attached to, you're going to be really upset if you chop it off. I'm serious. After the hairdresser cut my hair, I walked home crying all the way. I was even thinking about getting hair extensions. If, however, the idea of cutting it isn't a big deal to you and is actually exciting, then by all means, do it.

While I am not familiar with the "do" you are referring to, I also have thick, curly hair.

I finally had it cut around the ears and a bit fuller on top and have loved it. No maintenance-wash and flick with fingers and it always looks professional and well kept.

For me, it also shapes my round face....

There is my 2 cents.

:)

Colleen's hair is very straight.

Remember they had no blowdryers on that island.

If your hair is curly..it might just go *out* instead of down.

How curly is it? My best friend has long curly hair and I love it. She's cut it short, but I like it best when it's long.

Layers. You need layers if it's curly.

Don't brush or comb it out of the shower. Just finger comb.

Product and lots of it to keep the frizzies down.

I love long curly hair. Mine is straight, of course. We always want what we can't have.

I had hair that went past my hips and in a really stupid move had it all cut off.

It was not worth it and I regretted it everyday since. I would say just think real hard about it.

It is more wavy than curly

:p

I have the opposite hair that you do, Siren! Straight as a stick and very thin, although I have lots of it. I need a perm to give it any body at all.

Short hair is nice and would be convenient for your swimming. It dries quicker. But for court, I think either the short hair or the French twist (which my hair would NEVER do even when long, so I am jealous) is fine.

And if you cut it and don't like it? It will grow back. :)

Long hair vs short hair

With long hair you (and I) have versatility, it can go up or down and any number of ways. With short hair you are limited. I like the versatility. My lovers like the feel of the long hair on their body parts also..:D Think about it.

short or leave long?

I'm sure you'd know what I'll say to that by now

Here, Siren, I love playing at this site.. choose the length and texture you want/have. But ignore the color option, it'll give you more selections to choose from.

hairdos.com (go to "Sue-lect style selector")

I notice people who have short hair, usually want long hair and vice versa.. same with curly/ straight. I've had both long and short and never came up short for different styling options.. there are a lot of cute and stylish things you can do with that spikey cut Siren, and still get away with that 'professional look' you seek. :)

I have long wavy hair which I hate. My hair is naturally curly but because it is so long and thick it weighs down the curls and I wind up with this crappie wave curl mix. But my solution is I just iron it and yes, with an actual iron. (If you want to know how just ask, otherwise I won't bore you with details.) I've tried to use the straightening combs and stuff but my hair is just to thick for it and the iron really makes it straight and feel really silky. But if you do that you have to make sure you use Thermasilk or something like that because the iron can really fry your hair if you don't.

I have extremely thick curly hair. The kind that, unless you spend 45 minutes blowing it dry, it's still wet when you get home at the end of the day. I wear mine up or under a hat a lot because of what i do. but i like the versatility of having it long...the luxury of being able to have masses of hair.

I avoid that 'just fucked' hair when it's down by using curl enhancing shampoo, paul mitchel leave in conditioner, and curl enhancing mousse... and a diffuser. i used to try and tame the curls, but discovered that if i use the enhancers, they're more natural looking, and less likely to tousle and frizz.

Shear insanity!

I have longish curly hair- I like the "just fucked" look it can have- but understand the importance of looking professional at work. What I do is to let it air dry- mine seems less frizzy when I do this- part it neatly, then i take a curling iron to tame it sliding down my hair, curl the ends under- finger comb and spray. Tuck behind ears to keep off the face. Still looks neat enough to be professional, but I can wear it down. The downside is that it takes so long to do. Like you, I usually wear it up in a twist also...lol

Geez, I retract that 'love' statement.. I haven't played there in a year, looks like they've updated it with some crappy pics.

Well, ya gotta wade through the punk hairstyles to get to some of the prettier ones. There are some nice ones in there... and if Miss Siren had ever sent me a pic all those months ago, I would've been able to tell her which ones would look good on her. ;)

:p

The "just fucked" look

That's when my hair is at it's best! I love that look. I've thought about rolling around on the bed by myself before going out, but I don't think it would be the same.

Siren? I have long straight thick hair, and so does my daughter. When she wanted to have her almost butt-length hair cut very short, we made a deal - 3" per week until it was short enough. After three weeks she decided it was short enough.

Maybe you could go for a medium cut, just to test the "oh my god my hair my hair oh no what have i done!" waters. You can always go shorter. Growing it back cuz you've made a terrible mistake is a lengthier process (pun intended!), as you know.

Surely

this must be a sign of the apocalypse!

I need to do something with my hair as well. Mine is about the same as Siren's, looks messy when down....I hate it:(

Well, what about when you're not in court? What kind of hair do you want then? A french twist is a simple solution at professionalism. A shorter haircut is less versatile.

If you're out with you guy or just out, do you want that just fucked hair or do you want a more professional cut?

I'd say, since you've not done it before, just wait a while until it grows some more. From everything I've heard, hair has lengths that are good for you and bad for you. You just have to outwait the bad lengths. If you don't like it longer, you can always cut it. But if you cut it, you'll have to wait years for it to grow long enough for you to hit the same dilemma.

Also, if you're hair looks messy when it's down, you need to do three things. 1) Get a GOOD hairstylist. 2) Get a GOOD cut, that can be nothing more than the dead ends trimmed. It's not the length, it's the way it's cut. 3) Use quality shampoo that works for your hair all the time. Don't just buy it because it's cheap or your best friend swears by Paul Mitchell or the salon only pushes biolage.

I love short hair! Several years ago I had hair to almost the middle of my back. I decided I wanted a change, so I had it cut off to above my ears....I loved it. I much prefer my hair to be short. I am currently growing it out, but only because my boyfriend wants to see what I look like with long hair. It will get cut back off as soon as it reaches the bottom of my shoulder blades....it is just past my shoulders now. Doing different things with my hair doesn't bother me at all....I love change, and I like trying new things. I have had plenty of hair cuts and colors I hated, but hey...it isn't permenant.

I am the kind of person that will walk into a salon and tell the hairstylist to do what ever they want. It just doesn't bother me. Hair style does however have a strong effect on the way we look. I personally think that my facial structure looks better with a short cut. there is an avatar (can't remember whose) on this site with a woman that has a face shaped a lot like mine. It is a pic of a girl with short black hair and she has a nice spanking mark on her rear. I think that particular facial structure practically screams for a short hair cut. That is my personal opinion, I know it is not everyone's.

Now the one thing I had to deal with a lot of after cutting my hair really short was everyone having an opinion ;). Most the girls liked it....most of the guys hated it. None of that bothers me though....i liked it. Oh....and I did get a great ego boost out of it. I had a guy walk up to me at work and tell me that he had never seen a girl that looked good in short hair till me. He then went on to say I looked like a model and that is where he lost all credibility with me ;).

Siren, we have the same hair, so I understand your frustrations. When the interview season was approaching, I went to one of the most upscale salons in town (that I could afford), asked for the head stylist, and told him I wanted something professional, yet still fun for my off hours.

When I went in, my hair was several inches past my shoulders, with grown out layers that weighed heavily on my waves/curls. He spent an hour and half measuring and shaping my hair, and used about eight different scissors/sheers. He cut it to my shoulders, and layered it everywhere. Now I can tease it up for the "just fucked" look, or I can tame it down for more professional settings (even put it in a twist).

The layers took away a lot of the bulk, so drying is a snap. With a diffuser, it takes 7 minutes.

Let us know what you end up doing with your hair. :)

This is my concern:

Your hair when cut short will not have that wispy tousled look that Coleen has because Coleen had fine-medium thick-wavy hair in an area of high humidity.

You have thick, curly hair and I don't know about your humidity level, but it's important when your hair has curl and coarseness.

The chance of your hair turning into a bowl-shaped dark lump with awkward spikes is high. Trust me on this, I speak from experience. My hair is all one length, so thick a band only goes around it twice...just, very wavy underneath and straighter on top because it's coarse and heavy. I would fucking kill to have hair like Wynona Ryder or Meg Ryan. I missed the boat by seconds. Mine is coarser, thicker, just not quite curly enough one day, just a bit too curly the next. My hair is one of my best features but that doesn't mean it's easy and carefree. I have had the same style for a few years now with a tweak here and a layer there, because it works for me. I have also had it short and spiky and down to the middle of my back and everything in between.

These are my best tips:

Look for someone whose hair type matches yours first. Not a cut or style you like, but look at the hair type. Then look at the cut.

Ask. I don't hesitate to follow up a compliment with a request for the stylists name. It's easy! "I love your hair - where do you go to get it cut?"...works every time.

Find a stylist whose hair you love. Don't go to them. Find out who does their hair. Go to them, instead!

Find pics of famous people with hair types like yours, who have a cut you find attractive. Don't listen to the voice that says stylists hate pictures. Pictures tell them, better than you can probably, what you like. I look at Anne Archer, Renee Russo, Jennifer Tilly and Stockard Channing for example. There are so many celebrities with thick, wavy or curly hair now, you should have no trouble finding one who is close to reality for you and then searching for pictures of them over the past few years. The media makes it easy to track with the papparazzi glut.

At best you'll have a great haircut that is easy and flattering and timeless, at worst it'll take 6 months to a year to get it back.

Siren, my hair is long and wavy too but as soon as I get it cut short it automatically curls up very tight. And when I get it cut I stipulate how much I want cut off because off that.
I have had so many bad haircuts that I tend to avoid getting my hair cut but layered. (Allowing the hairdresser to only take the tiniest amount off the bottom)

I wash and conditioner my hair every day (lol to avoid the really touseled, why does my hair look like a birds nest look) but I don't blow dry it. Because it is layered it doesn't take long to dry. Styling it and putting in my favourite product to keep it away the frizzies, maneagable and natural looking.

Best of luck with what you end up deciding!
:)
