I Want to Boycott the Major TV Stations

Ok, here's the deal. I'm absolutely sick of this bullshit reality TV. The shows disgust me. It's like the Jerry Springer mentality has taken over all programming. There are more reality shows than sitcoms and dramas. There isn't a single show on these stations that I couldn't live without and I no longer want to be paying to utilize their product.

IS there anyway I can actually pay for some more obscure stations, maybe the history channel and some movie stations, without having to get ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX? I'd like to keep CNN, but at this point my major desire is to stop supporting or contributing to their media empires whatsoever.

I need to find out other things they control. Truly, with this Joe Millionaire, The Bachelor, and The Bachelorette shit, added to The Mole, Survivor, and that bullshit Temptation Island, it has become painful to watch TV.

I would accept any advice or suggestions.

That's true. I wonder what buying the NFL ticket or whatever does for the major TV stations. I wonder how much they get from that versus what they would get if I were to keep cable.

Go get the Dish Network or one of the other mini-dish systems and just don't subscribe to the local programming.

Most dish companies..all the crap you could want without the network channels.

BTW-Who the hell wants to watch 4 hours of "judge" shows?

Last time I checked, "Smallville," "The Gillmore Girls," "Monday Night Football," "The West Wing," "24," and "Will and Grace" were quality broadcast TV.

I mean, c'mon it's free, waddaya want?

Just give up Television. Its easier than you think.

Watch movies now and then, get your news and weather from the computer.

Can you program your remote? Just delete the network stations that you don't like. You'll skip right over them. And then make sure you write to the networks and tell them what you've done.

I do think that it should be possible to "customize" a cable contract. Hell, with everyone narrowcasting over the internet now, I don't see why I shouldn't be able to order NBC, RTÉ, BBC, CBC, or whatevah.

Ever heard of a thing called music? Turn your tv off,and put on some music man.I totally agree with you.TV sucks ass.The only reason they keep putting out shit, is because stupid people keep watching it!!!!!Put on a CD ,album,or a good porno.

Why do you people think I like sports so much?? It's the only thing thats good on TV.

Just don't watch those shows. Has anyone seen that show Firefly that was just canceled on Fox. It was on Friday nights during prime time. Best damn show I have seen in a long time but they never advertised for it...I have never seen a single commercial for it but I've been seeing this crap Joe Millionaire commercial for months before the damn show started. I don't understand did they just want the show to fail. Maybe if they freakin advertised the good shows a little bit people would watch them. I for one will be glad when this reality TV fad fades away.

I don't get sports. I sometimes can be persuaded to watch hockey (especially when Mr. Mischka is playing), but I don't understand the enjoyment people derive from this activity. Two teams, doing the same stuff over and over and over again, until time's up. The winner is the one that did more of the stuff that earns points. It's just so repetitive, and there's no plot.

I miss all the stand-up comics that used to be the rage on TV. It's expensive to go to every decent comic that comes through town, and I discovered some great talents through those shows.

Oh, on topic with the thread. It's escapism and voyeurism at its best (or its worst, depending on your attitude). Those shows are successful for the same reason the assholes and drama queens attract attention around here. No biggee.

WE NEED PORN
WE NEED PORN..

maybe cnn. ...........after........

It would be interesting to see what shows would be popular if TV was piped to the masses via the internet, kinda like they have started to do with internet radio. I would think the concept of "channels" and "networks" would go away and people would just pay to see the shows they want to see, sans the commericals. Not to mention, once you start paying for TV on a show by show basis, you aren't going to just watch any old thing like we do now when we channel surf.

Reality TV is just cheap. Bottom line. Shows with writers and sets and "stars" are expensive and hard to guarantee a hit with.

Even NBC can hardly squeeze a hit out of the schlock they've been trying to sell since "Seinfeld" went off the air.

Not true. SCRUBS is the best new sitcom on TV.

You don't get much sex do you?

Network television is paid for via advertising. If you want to make your feelings about a style of show or a specific show known, write hard copy letters to the sponsors. They can't know that there are a huge number of viewers who are sick of reality tv unless people tell them.

It's best when done from an activist standpoint. I think they estimate each letter received to represent 600 viewers. Bug your friends to write. Bug your family to write. Have them bug others to write. The more they hear, the less likely they'll be to sponsor those shows, thus cutting off the huge budget they have for advertising which puffs up their ratings.

For me, I don't watch enough tv to care about specific shows. If it floats someone else's boat, then I can just flip the channel or come down here and goof off on the 'puter.
