Ask any psychologist and they'll tell you that in many cases it's true. They'll also tell you that it's an invitation to disaster, especially when you know little if nothing about the intimate relations of your parents.
I often say that my father didn't die; he escaped. That doesn't mean that my mother and father had a "bad" marriage. It only means that I can't believe that they really got along. So, I set off to find a woman, unlike my mother, to whom I could relate as a mate. Well, as unbelievable as it seems, in two marriages, I married my mother, both times.
Thankfully, with the help of a caring therapist, appropriate medication and years of insight, I now have a good, although non-traditional marriage with a woman I relate to quite well. And my mother is my mother....Nothing more.
Live and learn. That's what life is all about.
