Lou,

Can I congratulate you on day six? Great!!!

Almost a whole week. Tadaaaa!

That really deserves some cheering. Watch me have a go at it.

Congratulations on making it through day 5. Also, I'm delighted that you took my suggestion to heart about the money saving. Though the amounts may seem small to some people, in 52 weeks, or exactly one year that's a total savings of 1,040 pounds divided between you and your two girls. Not too shabby, eh. Not to mention the 1,040 pounds used for household bills by your husband's not smoking, too. And that doesn't even include the interest you collected on this money so far. If all you spend of this is for a night on the town, to celebrate your first smoke free year then things really start to look interesting when the second year's anniversary rolls around. If this continues for five years you'll have, 5,200 pounds earning interest compounded in those bank accounts. If every time you get to this amount you invest 5,000 in something stable, but that pays more interest than a savings account you are well on the way to financing your children's college education, purchasing a new family vehicle, or even an estate of your own.

Wow, Dirt Man! When you put it like that, why didn't I give up smoking years ago? ;)

Cumulatively they are stunning sums of money. I'm beginning to think I won't tell my daughters about the accounts until they are 18. That way it will see them through Uni, buy them a car, and they'd still have enough left over to buy the candy bar and hair scrunchie. :D

Thank you, for such a great post.

Hi, Lou. Being several hours ahead of me, you should be on your sixth day now. I hope your husband took care of you horniness the other day. His own too, of course. By now, the worst physical part of it should be over, at least judging from my experience. The psychological part, especially the triggers, are still a problem. Not having cigarets around is an obvious help there.

Some others have said something about writing a story about it. I said I would write a poen, non-erotic, and here are the first two verses:

One day, Tatelou said to us, “I’m quitting smoking, guys.”
Written down the whynots and I’ve written down the whys.
Do you have some help for me?” she said to all on Lit,
Any tips you have for me to help me really quit?”

Sub Joe told her give them up for one day, till you see.
“I agree,” Black Tulip said. “I found it worked for me.”
“Cold turkey is the only way to go,” I said to Lou.
She agreed and said that lollipops may help her through.

:) If you object, I'll stop, of course.

:rose: ( )

Box, please don't stop, that was wonderful. I'd love to see more.

One thing, though, do you like making women cry? ;)

Lou

P.S. I do feel that things are getting easier, and yes, my horniness got taken care of. Lucky me! :D Lucky him! Hehehe!

:D Hi, Lou, and congrats on another day. I hate to make anybody cry, unless it is crying for happiness. Here is how far I have gotten so far. Some of these rhymes are a bit rough and I still have some verses to go.

One day, Tatelou said to us, I’m quitting smoking, guys.
Written down the whynots and I’ve written down the whys.
Do you have some help for me? she said to all on Lit,
Any tips you have for me to help me really quit?

I agree, Black Tulip said. I found it worked for me.
Quit them cold, the only way to go, I said to Lou.
She agreed and said that lollipops may help her through.

Rude Dude said don’t use a patch and mentioned Dutch Support.
Nausea just might help you, Lou, The Earl said in rapport.
Yuk and eeew and Blurgh! she said. I just might try it, though
Pop begged off but wished her luck and hoped she’d make it go.

Liar said he smoked no more because of smelly breath .
Mindy said stay off the booze and hoping you have strength.
‘Dita said that she quit once but started up again.
Watch out for the triggers, dear, I wish you well my friend.

Dirt Man said he wished her luck although he hadn’t quit.

I don't know just how much more I will be including but I will to try to include all the Lit. members who have contributed to this thread. This is fun but I will be very disappointed if it is all wasted effort. Everybody is behind you Lou.

Hi Box!

Yeah, they were good tears. Not many, but a few.

That poem is wonderful, and I really mean that. It's a huge motivational tool for me, and great to see everyone's comments and advice condensed in such a way.

Thank you!

Katie,

I surely missed a lot this week, if I'd known, I would have lent my support earlier. Keep going, it gets better, although not necessarily easier.

I quit 11 weeks ago and I'm still Jonesin' for a smoke from time to time, but Ive got a good support group (wife and 3 kids)

I started when I was 15, so I was addicted for over 30 years - at least a pack a day, so if I can do it, I know you can.

I have found it best to stay way from alcohol - that's when I still get the heaviest cravings. Gum and mini-tootsie roll pops (my personal favotie) help too.

But on the bright side, the sex is better (and more frequent) and food tastes great (my mother would say I needed the 5 kilos I've added). Also nice not to cough up hairballs every morning.

Keep going. You've got the right attitude, find reasons to make it through another day, then you'll find it's been a week, then a month, etc.

With a big hug,
Lime

Thanks, Lime! It's great to hear from someone who gave up smoking so recently.

It helps so much hearing personal accounts and advice. It makes me see that it isn't such an impossible task afterall.

I also started smoking when I was 15, so it was 16 years for me. I've tried to give up many times before, but always failed within the first two or three days. All of you guys that have contributed to this thread have made that crucial difference this time.

I have nowhere near got it cracked yet, and I'm not going to be cocky about it, either. I know there's still many hurdles to over-come, but I do believe I can do it. And, I will do it. Put it this way, I'm not putting myself through the hell of the aches, shakes and general numbness again. The physical withdrawal symptoms have lessened greatly now, and I'm not gonna go backwards.

And, I can completely relate to the coughing up of hairballs thing. I've already found that's gone, and it feels great!

Thanks again, and a big hug back to you.

Lou

One year and four months now, after smoking for nearly 35 years.

I never seriously tried to quit before, but I can tell you some of the perks in doing so.

You'll smell much nicer. Your food starts tasting better. And: your skin will look healthier and you'll get a better color!

:nana:

Crikey! You've done GREAT!

Those are three of the fifteen reasons on my list. Actually, here's the full list. I pull this up on my screen, when the going gets tough...

Why I Want To Stop Smoking!!!!!

1. I do not want to die young.
2. Chloe and Georgina will benefit no end.
3. I want to get fit.
4. I want this awful persistent cough to go away.
5. I don’t want to get breathless anymore.
6. I want my breath to smell fresher.
7. I want my teeth to be white.
8. I want my hair and clothes to smell fresh.
9. My sense of taste will improve.
10. The house will smell so much better.
11. Our sex drives will increase, even more.
12. I will feel less tired.
13. I will get fewer headaches.
14. My moods will improve.
15. My skin will look better, and not age so rapidly.

If those aren't damn good reasons to give up, I don't know what are!?

If any other smokers read this thread, please consider doing the same as me. I'm not gonna get *really* bad at nagging others, but I will be a little persuasive. ;)

BT, I wish I could hug ya! I've just noticed what you have as your 'Location'. That is just brilliant! I can't thank you enough.

*HUGS*

What can I say. Somebody mentioned something about Dutch support. What else could I do?

:D

I never had such a list, just a persistent cough. Now nr. 11 intrigues me.

Is that the reason I found myself on Lit all of a sudden?

Ah, yes! Of course. Good old Lew. Don't tell him I said "old". ;)

Number 11 is the most fun. :D

Could also explain why I've written so much more in the past week, too. I submitted another story today.

Lou :rose:

One thing I need to know, Lou, is how you pronounce your name. Dies it rhyme with mate blue? I'm working on that assumption but I thought I had better ask before I go much further. I have it mostly done, although I haven't included Lime yet. I should be able to finish it tomorrow which will be one week without the killer weed.

I really hope that you don't relapse and start smoking again because then all the time and the trouble will have been for naught. Of course, compared to the ones on your list, that is a very trivial reason.

Well, well, well, so you've made it to the 7th day without smoking, eh. Congratulations! When you go to bed tonight you'll have made it through a Whole Damn Week without smoking. The hardest part is over. You will now be able to take stock of your major accomplishment as you langor about relishing your vast success on this day of resting up for the next part of the battle. You'll also notice that the cravings have deminished to the point that you almost don't notice them now. Food actually has taste, and a wonderful aroma to it. Be careful here, don't let food take the place of your old habit. To fight this add more fruit (think citrus, but any fruit is great at this point) to your grocery purchases, and tell the family that you think it would be great to have fresh fruit around for when everybody wants to snack on something without ruining their hunger for lunch or supper. Banannas have a side benifit that if they get old before anyone eats them you can make bananna nut bread with them. You'll also want to cut down on the amount of food you put out for meals. Eating more often, but less quanity is a great way to diet if you eat only healthy, and less fatty food. Another thing to do is buy carrots to alternate between the celery, it's round, and feels better in your hand, and is just as healthy and more tasteful than celery, but with more vitamins. They also stay fresher longer in the fridge. Stores here carry packages of already peeled, and cut to non-filter size raw carrots, and they work great. This should make the pencil chewing stop. You can gnaw on a carrot all day long then just eat the shameful evidence up when you want.

Another thing that you'll notice now is that when you enter your house after being out in the fresh air that your home has a weird smell to it. This smell is actually attached to everything in your house, just like it was to your smoking hand, and imparticuarly the fingers you held your ciggies in all the time. Today is Saturday, so you have the rest of the weekend to have everybody in the family chip in and clean every wall, every surface, all the beddings, curtains, draps, and clothes in the house. Set hubby to steam cleaning the rugs, and furniture, you and the girls split up the rest. Oh yeah, clean and put all of the ashtrays in the attic. And while you're at it think about painting, or wallpapering every room in the house, and what colors you'd like to use. Talk it over with the whole family. Then make a plan to do at least one room every weekend until the entire house has that fresh painted, or new wallpaper smell to it. You can put new carpeting in when the budget can afford it.

Paint every ceiling first, and you'll probably need two coats of paint to do the job properly, and to be able to hide all of that nicotine residue. That can be the first project after cleaning the house. Did you clean the backs of all the pictures on the walls? Have the girls do that now. In fact in each room you redo have them clean the backs of everything in that room. Money for this comes out of the household cleaning budget. After all there is 20 pounds more in budget now, right. Once you finish redoing the inside of the house, add a few more live plants around. They add oxygen and take away carbon dioxide to the air. Flowers give the air a wonderful fregrance to offset that of food cooked in the kitchen. As do scented candles. I use to cook with a window at each end of the kitchen slightly open to add fresh air, and cool down the room.

Also, if you don't already have one, you might want to think of adding a small aquarium to the family room. They are soothing to watch, an educational tool in nature, and an all around wonderful family project to consider for the future. I suggest a twenty gallon tank to start with. And go with fresh water fish, as they are easier to care for. If you decide later to get a bigger tank you can put the older tank in the girls, or your bed room or the study/library room, or even the kitchen, or dinning room if there's room for it. It makes a great night light, and as I said adds a soothing atmosphere to any room. If you decide to get rid of the tank it makes a great gift if you can't sell it, and it didn't cost that much in the first place.

Hope this helps in any case.

Dirt Man

Hi, Lou.
This is the seventh day and in your time zone it is probably evening by now. I finished this poem and I hope you like it. I also hope it doesn't turn out to be un unfruitful project.

Tatelou quits smoking

One day Tatelou said to us, I’m quitting smoking, guys.
Written down the whynots and I’ve written down the whys.
Do you have advice for me? she said to all of Lit,
Any hints or any tips to help me really quit?

Sub Joe told her give them up for one day till you see.

Mindy said stay off the booze; I hope you have the strength.
‘Dita said she quit them once but started up again.
Watch out for the triggers, dear, I wish you well my friend.

Dirt Man said he wished her luck although he’s smoking some.
Remec told of triggers, how they’re hard to overcome.
Pierce Street told a story that he hoped would help her quit.
Quit them, Lou, remember that your life depends on it.

SnoopDog’s not a smoker but advised on saving dough.
BT led us cheering, yelling go, girl, go, girl, go.
Phildo said that exercise will help you quite a bit.
Charley said stay out of bars and sex will help you quit.

Raphy offered hugs and Destinie could do the same.
Tatelou thanked them, for the hugs could help her win the game.
Dirty Lover told her how he quit them recently.
Once again we stood and cheered, directed by BT.

Icingsugar checked in, said he wished the best for Lou.
Whispering Surrender told us Raphy said so too.
Phildo led us in a cheer but then he called her “Tat”
Tatelou thanked him for the cheer and said don’t call me that.

Lee said this is how I quit and gave some good advice.
Sorry that I’m late Mhari said and kissed her twice.
Smoked for thirty years said Lime and quit not long ago.
Ev’rything is better, ‘specially sex and food you know

Lou, I know the folks on Lit. are fully on your side.
Giving you encouragement to help you turn the tide.
Giving you advice and saying what you ought to do,
Saying hang in there, my dear, we hope you see it through.

And on the seventh day, Tatelou looked around her and said: "It's good that I have quitted."

:D

One more round of cheers. Go Lou, go.
