Reminds me of an Irishman who was on our ship (or boat I should say) when I was in the Navy. He joined the U. S. Navy in Scotland and served on a ship there. Don't know the whole story of how it happened that he was there, but while in Scotland he feel in love with his "Scottish Lass". He never told us her name, just his "Scottish Lass." Seems he had the duty one day at sweepers call. "Sweepers, sweepers, man your brooms, get a clean sweep down fore and aft and empty all receptacles on the pier." He did it with the voice of John F. Kennedy. It must have been a good impression, because next thing he knew he was standing duty at an ammo depot in the middle of Arizona. Then sent to our boat. There was a standing joke that sailors were sent to our type of craft if they had enemies in the Navy Department. I know it was a joke, but I saw it in writing when I was on staff duty from the Chief of Staff in a letter he had me type.

Anyway, Irish was a likable guy who either you hated or were close friends with. He just rubbed some people wrong. The Irish Ladies Society of Los Angeles presented him with a flag, Green Shamrock on a Green Field which he presented to the Captain to fly. He said that someday he was going to make it back to Scotland and his Irish Lass. He knew this to be true because that great Irishman Christopher Columbus proved the world was round. If he kept going west he would return to her. Last I heard was when he was transferred after a WESTPAC year long cruise we made and went back to Asia. Always going West. I hope he made it back to his Scottish Lass.

I've seen some of the ships that people have put up on here. I came from a Navy family and joined as soon as I was able to sign up. Been on many flags including a Russian and the Spanish Tall Ship for its cadets. Even had a run in with Chinese pirates and Arab bandits. Survived a collision at sea and came close to drowning three different times. Washed overboard with seven other guys, but King Neptune didn't like our taste so tossed us back. My father and his uncles had many sea stories as well as the women in the family. There is only one type of boat or ship I won't sail on. A cruise ship. They seem to be too dangerous.

I was astonished that anyone would even attempt to make a film. We should all thank Peter Weir and Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. for taking a shot at it.

Unfortunately, it wasn't a commercial success (according to Wikipedia, cost was $150 million with total worldwide receipts of roughly $212 million). Those special effects and ships don't come cheap.

Over 30% profit of 62 million. And not a success. Most megacorps get by on far less than 10% profit except maybe Cdn banks.

It's not accurate to look at it that way. You don't know the time period when the gross receipts came in. You don't know what expenses had to be netted against those gross receipts.


You can bet your bottom dollar if there was a buck to be made, a sequel would have resulted.
