When i boot up my computer for the first time in the morning no problems but i will disconnect from the internet and leave the computer on for the day and after a few hours when i get back on the net i get this pop up.

The document contains no data.

I use firefox for my browser and the home page has nothing on it it is a blank white page i can get to lit. but no where else.

So if i shut down my computer and reboot it then it is all normal again until i let it sit for a few hours.

So what do you think it is. Thanks.

What operating system do you use?

Do you usually have Outlook or Outlook Express open and trying to check for mail periodically?

Do you have some other program set to automatically check the internet (for updates or a page that autorefreshes, for example)

I use Win 98SE and have found that leaving Outlook Express to check for mail every fifteen minutes without an active internet connection will scramble the internet connection when it is reestablished, causing random lockups and/or sites that just won't respond.

If I remember to select "Work Offline" before leaving the computer sit for a while, the problem is MUCH less noticeable.

I've also found that letting my virtual memory swap file get fragmented causes similar problems, so I change the location and/or size of the swap file about once a month to keep the problems under control.

Well i am using windows 98 and my browser is firefox my outlook express had stopped working for me a little while back could not delete anything.

But it is when i just sign on instead of getting the open page for firefox i get a white screen and when i try to get to any site it says no data but i can get to lit. no problem there but know where else.

I am thinking maybe outlook express got messed up and needs to be reinstalled i am thinking so part of the operating system for outlook got messed up.

But to get to a site i want to go to when it is like that i have to shut down my computer for a few seconds and then boot it back up and it works fine.

It is when i go off line and let it sit for a few hours and then get back on i don't want to shut it down each time i go offline.

Try deleteing your temporary internet files and reinstalling Outlook Express, but I think that getting in the habit of setting your sytem to "working Offline" will be a longer term resolution.

I think what is happening is that repeated attempts to access the web -- by outlook or by something like your anti-virus program trying to update -- when the web isn't available scrambles the caching and virtual memory.

Rebooting resets the cache and the virtual memory so that everything works until you leave it to try to futiley access the web for an hour or three.

You should laso disable all automatic update functions you can find and set yourself a schedule to manully update things that really need updating.

a shot in the dark

i used to have problems with win98 if the hibernate/power-save functions were on. i don't remember anything specific to internet access but i know that if i left the computer idle long enough for the power-save to kick in, windows would have a minor stroke trying to come out of it.

This is a specifc error relating to a program attempting to access a website which has moved on. Almost certainly the likely cause of this is a piece of malware on your PC, I suggest getting Spybot Search and Destroy (google for it) and running it as that will pick up on any rogue processes running on your pc and let you get rid of them.

If the monitor goes into standby or sleep mode, sometimes moving the mouse doesn't bring the screen back - if I go into the power management on the control panel and set it to "never turn of monitor" would that fix the problem??

i don't know if you're offering a solution or asking for yourself. i don't have 98 anymore so it's not a problem for me. when it WAS a problem, it was because the PC would go into hibernate or power-save mode (i don't remember which) and not the monitor. if you're having the problem, i'd recommend disabling both features... win98 seemed to have a problem processing its own features, or so i was told. weirdharold might be able to elaborate if i'm even close to being on the mark with this.

Win98 does have problems with some hardware and it's default power management settings. I personally don't have any problems with any of the power-saving routines, but then I have Windows set to use the hardware sleep functions where possible.

Changing the way Win98 puts the monitor to sleep will help if you're having a problem with the power mangement scheme.

I have adaware on my computer and avg. anti-viruse.

But i will have to see what me settings are set at. It just started a few weeks ago i use to ba able to let it sit all day and never had this problem.

What i was thinking is maybe a piece of OS was deleted by mistake and maybe reinstaling win98 will fix the problem.

I would suggest running a scan using Ad-Aware.
Personally I would Perform a Full System Scan. When the Scan is complete, on the results page right click and SELECT ALL.
Then remove all that it has found.

See if that helps, but the guys are right Win 98 has it issues and good advice has been given to you on this.

I would also recommend you fix, re-install Outlook Express.

I re-installed my windows 98 and got outlook working again but i still have the problem with getting on after sitting for hours.

I get on in the morning and clear my emails and talk to a few people and then do my buisness for the day i leave the computer on all day.

It is disconnected but just left on.

When i connect back on to the net the screen is not firefox which i use the browser the screen is blank nothing on it.

I can get on lit. with no problem but another site i go to i can not get on it just says this document has no data just like when i first connect from sitting for awhile.

I tryed IE as my browser just now and i can get on my other site with no problem.
