When there is a fight to be fought, that is where the majority of the fighters will go. Bin Laden was happy fighting the soviets in Afghanistan--the holy war ran dry, so he went looking. These days extremists have a destination, Baghdad. They have an easy enemy to hate--one that wishes to completely dominate MidEast/Arab affairs and resources. Palestinian groups fight their occupiers--they get a fair amount of global sympathy.

Being a spark is their goal. Highly organised groups aren't anarchists for the sake of participating in anarchy, they want support--they want legitimacy.
