I did something yesterday, I am loath to admit - I watched a short piece on Dr. Phil. To say I hate that moron is really an understatement. However, the piece I watched was about to idiotic teenage girl who insists on driving while texting her friends.

This happens to be a pet peeve of mine, and has been ever since some stupid kid sideswiped me on the freeway while texting some time ago.

I don't agree with driving while talking on a cell phone. I think it's dangerous because your attention is on your phone, not your driving. Texting is far worse.

So, Phil has the bitch tested driving in a simulator while texting. In 10 minutes she had 56 infractions - driving on the wrong side of the street, driving on the shoulder of the road, speeding, and finally crashing head-on into a fire truck.

She was unimpressed with the outcome. :(

theres a halloween story in there just DYING to be written babe ;)

Bluetooth, baby. ;)
Can't agree with Bluetooth either, Cloudy. The problem is still the same - your attention is on your phone call, not your driving.

Just ask my boss. He's a constant Bluetooth user. His auto insurance is now $800/month and he'll be canceled if he has another wreck. Every accident he's had has been directly realted to his cell phone.

The one wreck I had in the last ten years was some guy struck me while talking on his cell.

I just don't get it.

Hmmm... I can see it...

Talking dirty on my cell phone to a hot Scottish babe while tooling down I-5, doing me self with a 12 inch dildo. Works for me.

Love you, Fem

Far more so than the radio, talking to someone - anyone - presents far too much of a distraction to a driver, even hands-free. Talking on a cell phone while driving should be absolutely banned. The only exception I can see is if you can prove, with phone records, that you were calling home or a babysitter for no more than two minutes to report that you might be late arriving.

That's just my opinion, of course. But it's unassailably correct. :)

I'm with you Jenny.

She clearly needs to lose her driving privileges.

Don't like the showman Dr. Phil.

The new, even balder guy seems solid (can't think of his name).

Dr. Drew Pinsky is solid.

I dunno...what's the difference between talking on bluetooth, and talking to the person in the seat next to you?

Doesn't seem like much.

I also notice that both the examples you give are men. I wonder if women are better multitaskers?

I don't think so, Cloudy. I googled drvers with cell phones. Studies at the University of Utah and Harvard, as well as the National Traffic Safety Board and Nationwide Insurance all say driving with a cell phone, regardless of sex, is akin to driving while drunk.

People of both sexes aged 18-25 tend to be the worst group driving with cell phones and worse still while texting.

That's true, but it often escapes us. I think talking to someone else in the car is probably more distracting than the radio, which, as long as it isn't too loud, is usually more like innocuous elevator music (unless it covers the sound of that bulldozer headed for your passenger door).

Using a cell phone, though, is distracting to the max, and shouldn't, I think, be permitted to be added on to the other distractions in the first place. I had to laugh the other day. I was driving along and stopped at a light I was the only one at a busy intersection who wasn't on a cell phone. I had one in the car; I just didn't know where it was or how to use it.

(We have bluetooth in our newest car, too--and have no idea how to activate that. We do manage to find the new navigation system equally desitracting, though.)

Yes, but bluetooth is such a recent thing, that I can't help but think that bluetooth users weren't included in the study. After all, its still not that widespread.

eta: I never text in the car, but use my bluetooth? Absolutely. But then, I'm not much of a phone talker, though. My conversations (except with Abs when I'm sitting safely on my couch) are usually very short and concise.

Well, a broken clock is wrong twice a day too.

I really wish they would pass a law about using cell phones and text messaging while driving. Then there are the people who read while driving. It's bad enough to be reading directions while driving, but I've seen people reading the newpaper and even books.

Of course, there are enough other morons on the roads... Seriously, if I had a dollar for every accident I avoided because someone else was stupid...

From what I remember about driving a car in NZ, I don't think it really matters. What's a few sheep, more or less?

Just what are you implying?

My Abnormal Psych instructor thinks that Dr Phil is full of it.

I don't really talk on my cell phone that much, definitely not while driving. While driving many miles down the road behind someone swerving in and out of both lanes, I wonder who the hell they're talking too that it can't wait till they're at their destination and not driving a potential 2+ ton killing machine.

Why do they need a specific law for every type of distraction?

Virtually every jurisdiction that regulates driving has a law already on the books against driving while distracted to cover ANY behavior that take your attention away from driving safely. It's technically illegal to tune your radio or change tapes/CDs while your vehicle is moving everywhere I've ever driven.

Aside from increasing the complexity of an already overly complex legal code, banning specific distractions engenders a "what is not specifically forbidden is permitted" mindset in both drivers and lawmakers.

It was a young woman (professional early 20's) while texting and attempting to retain full control of her vehicle at 100kph who veered into the bike lane and killed a cyclist.

It is illegal to use a mobile phone whilst driving in this country, yet she was only "slapped on the wrist" by the judicial system.

What price a human life?
