After the deluge, the lies: Misinformation and hoaxes about Helene cloud the recovery

Reporting by the AP

According to former President Donald Trump, the federal government is intentionally withholding aid to Republican disaster victims. Far-right extremist groups warn on social media that officials plan to bulldoze affected communities and seize the land from residents. A tale straight from science fiction asserts that Washington used weather control technology to steer Helene toward Republican voters in order to tilt the presidential election toward Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.

“They’re being treated very badly in the Republican areas,” Trump told Fox News, ignoring reports and photo and video evidence of recovery efforts underway throughout the region. “They’re not getting water, they’re not getting anything.”

State and local officials from both parties have condemned the conspiracy theories as rumors, saying the focus should be on recovery, not political division and hearsay. Responding to the hoaxes is taking up time that should go toward assisting victims, said North Carolina state Sen. Kevin Corbin, a Republican who urged his constituents not to give into hoaxes.

State-run media and disinformation campaigns run by China and Russia have amplified false and misleading claims about the response to the storm. Both countries have used social media and state news stories to criticize responses to past U.S. natural disasters, part of a larger effort to stoke division and distrust among Americans.

How in the hell does the Director of Public Affairs of FEMA lock their Twitter account during a catastrophic emergency?

what. a. fucking. grifter.
no wonder trump's sliming all over him.

all those bigging musk up for being so altruistic by offering 'free: internet for Helene survivors:

Musk: adding, “Starlink terminals will now work automatically without need for payment in the areas affected by Hurricane Helene.”

A closer look at the website, though, shows that the offer comes with a few caveats.

“Please note: A Starlink kit is required to access this free service. If you do not already have a Starlink kit, you will need to purchase one,” the site explains.

So, how much exactly does a Starlink kit cost? New customers will still have to pay close to $400 for a Starlink kit, including shipping and tax, according to Gizmodo. Starlink has also warned of significant delays that may prevent orders from arriving for weeks, and encouraged those seeking its services to buy a kit from retailers such as Best Buy or Home Depot. There, the kit will cost more like $350 not including tax.

But that’s not all users will have to pay. “After 30 days, we will move you to a paid Residential subscription,” the SpaceX site reads. A paid residential subscription costs $120 per month, a significant upcharge from a typical internet service, which could cost around $40 per month.

so these people, who have likely lost everything or mostly everything, will need to fork out over $350 for the kit before they can get 1 month "free" after which they'll be charged roughly 3 times the price of other subscriptions.

How much will it cost if they pray? 😂

man calls into MSNBC saying his father-in-law (Asheville) only believes trump... so much so that it's breaking up their family. trump's lies are literally harming his own supporters.

"My father-in-law lives just outside of Asheville, North Carolina, and he was badly damaged by Hurricane Helene. And he has refused all FEMA help because he's a hardcore Trumper. He literally believes that if he accepts any help from FEMA, they will take his house.

"I don't understand how many people are under the spell of this freaking con-man. I don't understand it.

Dan, it's hard. It's hard to even imagine. I mean, he's lost almost everything, and he's refusing all help from the federal government and complaining to us he doesn't have food, that he doesn't have the stuff he needs, and yet he won't accept the help."
The guy goes on to say he's not in a position to fly right across the country
Dan Abrams asks if he has electronics, if the guy could send his father-in-law fact-checking stuff, bulletins with actual truths in them.

"We've done all of that. We've done that. We've sent him, we've sent him all the FEMA bulletins. We've sent him all the stuff from fact checkers. He doesn't believe it. He thinks it's all—he just believes Trump, literally, Dan. He just—it's a cult! He's a cult member. I'm sorry to say it. He's a cult member. And he's my father-in-law and it sucks."

Republicans are fighting efforts to extend voter registration after Hurricane Helene.
of course they are.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Georgia Coalition For The People's Agenda want the deadline extended by a week because of the devastation left by Helene. They have asked an Atlanta federal judge to grant the extension, but the Republican National Committee and the Georgia Republican Party are fiercely opposed to this and have asked to be named as defendants in a motion filed on Tuesday.

I am concerned for all those people, however they vote, who have lost their documents due to Helene and now Milton... they may be registered to vote, but how long does it take to replace that kind of proof of citizenship and what costs are involved? I can easily imagine that any additional costs and inconveniences might get pushed to one side when families are just trying to get back into homes that need completely refitting; will it affect the outcome of election races? dunno, but possibly.

I wonder how many people here believe the government can control the weather?

I’m sure there are some, because we recently discovered people here who think the moon landings were faked.

So step forward. Share with us what you believe about weather control. Don’t be afraid to admit your beliefs. I’m really curious.

No one modified the weather to target people with strong hurricanes.

I never have to provide id to vote, just give my name and sign on the line.
As long as they have the voter rolls, they should be ok.

trump-instigated gofundme page to raise money for Hellen survivors has gotten over $14M

that is great!

however (with trump, that's a given) the wording leaves room for contemplation:

The funds are being used to assist survivors of a botched assassination attempt against him, as well as individuals impacted by Hurricane Helene.

“Not one penny of this funding is going anywhere but to those impacted,” Trump’s campaign spokesperson Brian Hughes said.

he is a 'survivor' of the assassination attempt, and mar-a-lago was impacted by the hurricane.
that means he isn't actually breaking any laws if he double-dips

what it would do, though, is dilute the available funds to help as many people as possible.

While the use of crowdfunding for such efforts is unusual for a political campaign, experts have raised concerns regarding the accountability and transparency of the funding

“It’s pretty unusual and actually quite odd,” attorney Brett Kappel stated.

it's trump. he's greedy greedy greedy for the greenies. probably even sees it as his 'right' (given the wording) and how no-one should be bitching because if it wasn't for HIM these funds wouldn't have been raised (except they likely would have but through genuine relief and rescue sources)
