Hurricane Hell-ene

Apparently, this.Hurricane dumped up to 30ft of.rain in some areas of the Appalachians faster than any recorded storm in history.

The shift of the storm and speed made it impossible to properly track and get ahead of
?? was that 3'? 30' sounds... well, i can't really even imagine 3' let alone 30'

Yah, It seemed insane to me as well ...I reread it ...the rivers swelled by 30ft. The rain itself was up to 30 inches of rainfall in one area

In Asheville, North Carolina, a total of 13.98 inches (35.52 centimeters) of rain fell from September 25 to 27, according to National Weather Service records.

The precursor event caused the moisture increase and unprecedented rain totals.

Godfrey said the rain overnight Wednesday was driven by a rare precursor event, when a front stalled over the region and funneled moisture pushed north by the tropical storm.

From news interviews I’ve seen with locals, they showed one guy pointing at a two story building saying the flood waters reached the second floor. So 30’ isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

just watched a clip of a survivor from Asheville in hospital, who was in a house with others and his fiancée when they saw a 30' wall of water and debris hurtling towards them. It demolished the house, with them in it. He's pretty banged up but his fiancée is still missing. :(

there will be films made about Helene.

Self-proclaimed billionaire starts Go Fund Me for disaster survivors

It’s not clear if the former president himself donated; Trump is not listed as one of the donors who has given the most, a range that spans from $1,500 to $500,000. The Trump campaign partnered with the Christian humanitarian aid organization Samaritan’s Purse to supply fuel, food, water, and other resources to Georgia, according to the Associated Press. The Independent has reached out to a Trump spokesperson for comment.

Tennessee plastics factory staff killed in Hurricane Helene reportedly told not to evacuate

One worker said Impact Plastics managers would not let employees leave, which company denies
Jacob Ingram, a mold changer at the company, told the Knoxville News Sentinel that as the flooding started, managers instructed employees to move their cars away from the rising water – but would not let them leave. “They should’ve evacuated when we got the flash flood warnings, and when they saw the parking lot,” he said to the newspaper. “When we moved our cars, we should’ve evacuated then … we asked them if we should evacuate, and they told us not yet, it wasn’t bad enough.

“And by the time it was bad enough, it was too late – unless you had a four-wheel drive.”

Ingram told the Knoxville News Sentinel that he and 10 other employees later tried to leave by taking refuge on an open-bed truck. Debris hit the truck, made two people fall into the water and eventually caused the truck to flip.

We must have profits or it's not the American Way.

I would advise folks donate to the red cross rather than GoFundMe to ensure their money is used properly. Don't trust those who have already demonstrated their willingness to grift off their cult.

i was reading about this yesterday: the company was praising their staff, bemoaning their losses and saying it wasn't the company's fault... one line that stood out was the company saying that they told the employees to leave 'once the flood water was starting to cover the carpark and was across the access road'

that is too late.

As a massive hurricane thrashed the southeastern United States in late September 2024, social media posts claimed Democrats used the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) to create the storm to prevent Republicans from voting in the upcoming presidential election. This is false; scientists have repeatedly refuted the notion that the atmospheric research initiative can manipulate the weather.

"They are using HAARP to ensure that HURRICANE HELENE devastates the largest Republican stronghold area in Florida. This hurricane will destroy homes, displace thousands and ensure much less participation in the presidential election in November," says a September 26, 2024 Facebook post.

confirmed death toll rises to 182
no information on the number of people still not accounted for

President Joe Biden announced Wednesday he has directed the deployment of "up to one thousand active-duty soldiers to reinforce the North Carolina National Guard." The announcement comes as Biden will travel to South Carolina and North Carolina Wednesday to survey the impacts of Hurricane Helene.

"These soldiers will speed up the delivery of life-saving supplies of food, water, and medicine to isolated communities in North Carolina -- they have the manpower and logistical capabilities to get this vital job done, and fast. They will join hundreds of North Carolina National Guard members deployed under State authorities in support of the response," Biden said in the statement.

The more I hear about this storm, the more I believe there was no way to prepare for it. It shifted and expanded so quickly.

I’m in Florida and didn’t expect it to flood Central NC, but for years we’ve been warned of more powerful storms. I guess this is an example.

From what I’ve been told constantly—especially by members of Congress—that prayer would have protected everyone had they prayed properly and consistently.

The reason the destruction was so bad in Western North Carolina is simple. I have lived here close to fifty years and even before that there has been no weather event this bad. The prime real estate is right beside rivers, creeks and streams. Now that everything too close is washed away there is a new high waterline. Will anyone notice ?

human nature is what it is: despite the continuous warnings of the storm, the rainfall, the massive area it was expected to cover, people not used to seeing the effects of a hurricane so far inland didn't seem to take that as legit, or perhaps thought it an exaggerated 'worst case scenario' that simply wouldn't happen because there was no history in their living memories of such an event.

it's tragic that such a terrible event is needed before people become aware that this might affect them, too.

Antivax MAGAts are dead now because they listened to trump instead of scientists.

Same thing is happening here.
