No - no it isn't typical. I have hunted for over 35 years, have met hundreds of hunters and I have yet to meet or know a hunter who sat and drank beer while waiting at a pre-baited spot.mansome said:so you don't think that's typical?
seriously.. hunting is huge in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.. kids get the first day of deer hunting season off from school.. Employers have to give the day off to their employees because they know they just won't show up.... I know hundreds of people personally who live for this and yes THIS is what they do and how they go about it...
and it is typical
I will admit to once sitting at a spot overlooking an old apple tree that I knew the deer frequented - but the spot was not 'pre-baited' (illegal in most states). I did that for weeks before I shot a deer under that tree. That was usually what I did in the very early morning and late afternoon as part of a day of hunting. The rest of the day I varied between still hunting and stalking.
In my experience, deer are not bewildered when I have hunted them. One deer that I shot was very smart - that deer had hunkered down into some ferns (about 2 foot high) as I slowly walked through. It was only the fact that I was very quiet, taking three steps or so then stopping and looking around, that fooled that deer into thinking that I had passed and it was now safe to leave. I saw that deer out of the corner of my eye - it rose from the ferns and started slinking away after I had passed.
