i have a few whitish bumps around the bottom of my vaginal opening that my partner noticed yesterday. at first we thought it may be scar tissue or something from tearing? i was looking online today and it sounded very similar to hpv warts. but it also said that warts are very rare. i made an appointment to see a doc. we both had tests done about 6 months ago that showed up negative for std's and haven't had sex with any other people since. so i'm wondering if it could be something else, or it was just to early to detect or something when we got our tests done.

I do not think they can test for the wart virus when they test for STDs, that is something that has to be seen to diagnose.

Warts are not rare. I have 2 friends that have them and get them burned off every so often.

It is one of the most common STDs in the world.

Here is what the CDC says.

""""Approximately 20 million people are currently infected with HPV. At least 50 percent of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have acquired genital HPV infection. About 6.2 million Americans get a new genital HPV infection each year."""

yeah, i read it was the most common std, but that only a few types of hpv include warts, and that was rare... eh...

i was also told last night that health clinics don't treat warts. is this true? and if so, how much does it cost to see a doc. and get treatment and all that?

BLAH! damn him...

Some clinics may not, though I think that would vary. I'm not sure what the treatment is to be honest, as I've never had them.

HPV is a virus that causes warts. The regular wart virus is everywhere, on everything, and those that get regular warts are just those whose systems are susceptible to the virus. HPV is a lot the same way.

And don't say damn him yet! Unless he's the only guy you've been with, you could have gotten this from a partner years ago and not known it. HPV isn't always something that manifests itself immediately. Unless he's been out screwing around, I would be careful about pointing fingers. ;)

i know it's not necesarily his fault, but it's pretty likely. i've had sex with 3 other guys 1 was a virgin, and the others i always used condoms. while he's slept with 50-60 girls and i know he didn't always use protection. so i'm betting on he gave it to me.

Well I'd take those odds if I were in a casino, but it doesn't always work that way unfortunately.

OH, and condoms aren't as effective against HPV because they aren't necessarily transmitted through fluids. If the guy had warts on his sacka nd it was bouncing around, the virus could be transfered.

I'm sorry I don't mean to sound like I'm defending him and bashing you. I'm just trying to say that a condom isn't 100% protection against HPV and that you can be a carrier without visible warts. :)

I had a boyfriend that had HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) warts, and he either caught them a) off his mother when she gave birth to him (genital warts can be passed on to a child in the birth canal), or b) from his ex girlfriend. If case a) the virus lay dormant for 18 odd years.

2 out of 3 people (In Australia) will have HPV, but it can lie dormant for years and not present with warts.

You can buy topical cream to apply to warts, but I wouldn't bother and just get them lasered off. Most public sexual health places should offer information, free std checks and treatment.

It's more rare to get warts than just be a carrier, but we're using 'rare' loosely because plenty of people get the actual warts.

And if you haven't read it, men aren't tested for HPV unless they have visible warts or are in some kind of medical study. So, even if a guy tells you he's had "comprehensive testing," you need to think carefully about not using condoms before being in a long-term monogamous relationship. STI testing may also exclude herpes, so when you're tested, you'll want to find out exactly what they're doing and ask for tests that are excluded.

Most health clinics should treat warts, or at least refer you to someone who will. Do some calling around today to your local Planned Parenthood clinics and maybe state/county clinics. If you go to a regualar doc w/o health insurance, it could be pretty expensive...maybe $150 for a new-patient exam, and $200 for one removal session? (I'm completely guessing on those, it could very well be more or less, so call and ask)

I think these might be helpful for finding free or low-cost care, rosebud:

OK STI screening and healthcare (look down the page...there are a few that do free screenings and low-cost healthcare)
Oklahoma STD Resource Directory (detailed info, just click on your county and those within driving distance)
http://ask.hrsa.gov/pc/ (Just do the search, and call the clinics to ask if they do HPV and other STD testing and treatment or can refer you to someone who does)

STD National Hotline (800) 227-8922

Whatever it is I would not hesitate to be checked. Have them screen you for everything. I was checked before my husband and I agreed to monogomy, we were still dating, and I had HPV. I have the strain that increases risk for cervical cancer, and have had precancerous cells removed from my cervix twice, and I am only 21. I read an estimate that 80% of the sexually active population is infected with HPV. I can't remember if that was a national (US) or global estimate.

DIY, 35% Hydrogen peroxide does wonders on warts. I consider it a massive offense when something tries to grow on my body. NOT GONNA HAPPEN. I have a wart on my big toe that keeps fighting me. I kept hitting it with 3% H2O2, this time I got out the old razor blade and some 35% H2O2 and I think I won. Warning, make sure your not eating when you click the link.

That's a great idea, why don't we all mutilate out genitals!

Well if you want the wart removed, what the fuck do you think the doctor (Guesser) is going to do. Maybe not with a razor blade, but by some other means, be it chemical, heat, or freezing.

BAD idea!!! Apart from at-home or prescription treatments, you should NEVER, EVER try to remove warts yourself. Cutting, as you described, can spread the warts and cause infection, even with the use of peroxide. You can try some of the OTC wart remedies that contain salicylic acid or the at-home "freeze-off" treatments, and some people have even had luck applying duct tape over a period of time. Facial warts should always be treated by a doctor, preferrably a dermatologist, due to the risk of scarring.

Genital warts are treated differently than those on other parts of the body, so doing it at home is an even worse idea. The OTC home remedies are NOT safe for genitals, and again, cutting/tearing/picking is ALWAYS a bad idea. Are serious injury and permanent damage really worth a doctors bill?

You may want to read this and this before advising home treatment.

You aren't a kidding! I had a wart on my hand that I used an OTC remedy on. It went away. No biggie, I'd had a couple throughout my life. Within 3 weeks it was back, along with two more friends at different points along the top of the same finger. Well shit, this time i went to the dermatologist. He froze them. They receeded, but didn't go away completely. Within three weeks I now had two more small ones on different parts of my hand and the original two were back only larger. So this time he cut them out and burnt the roots deeper.

I thought all was golden. 5 weeks later they started to come back> On the orignal three locations, where there used to be 1 wart there were not a pair of twins! I thought maybe it was somethign in my hockey gloves, but my Dr said no, it was just that my body was susceptible to the virus. So now what? Chemotherapy!

I shit you not! I got this perscription from the Mayo Clinic that was labelled as chemotherapy! I had to be careful notot apply it to healthy skin. I put this stuff on twice a day and covered them with Duct Tape. I did this for 7 days, thoguh I was supposed to do ti for like 4 weeks. I got frustrated and gave up. Within two weeks they were totally gone, and haven't came back since. That was years ago!!!!!

Now, imagine if these were gential warts and I'd just sliced em off with an xacto blade and they spread like this? No thanks, I'll go see a specialist! :(

I used to have just a couple tiny warts on my hands, and a couple on my feet, when I was a teenager. None of the OTC things I tried kicked 'em, but they weren't severe enough to seek treatment for.

My family moved to AZ when I was 17. For some reason, within two weeks, every one of them was gone, and I haven't seen a sign of 'em since.

Weird. Did you move from a place with relatively high humidity or cold temperatures?

Well one of the other effects of this stuff they gave me is that it boosts the immune system and helps your body to build a resistance to the wart virus. I think it's entirely possible that your body just built up a resistance to the virus. Especially at 17. That's a point where the body is growing and developing in all aspects, including immune system.

You know, you can have HPV and not present with warts.

The warts can show anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months after infection, or lie dormant for years.

yeah, so i went to the gyno yesterday, and he said it was probably a rash due to my sensitive skin and told me to get some soap with iodine in it, and it should be gone in a week or two. the thing is... i don't know where to find iodine soap

Betadine is an iodine soap. I don't know how readily available it is to the general public, though.

Nope. AZ is very dry, and very hot, especially during the time of year that I moved there.

I never had a problem with 'em after I left AZ, either -- I spent 2.5 years in WA, and 6 months in England, before coming back to AZ, and still no problems. *shrug*

Check with a pharmacist. They ought to know where you can find it.

Hey....try not to go too crazy! IF it is him that gave it to you, if he's a long term guy I highly doubt that he meant to and giving a gf an std can be worse than getting the damn thing itself. I got herpes a few months back from my long term bf and yeh sure, i got something for the rest of my life that hurts like a motherfucker a few times a year but try to consider him for a second. It broke my guys heart and was 10 times harder for him than it was for me. Try and understand its just as hard for him as it will be for you, and don't forget to keep talking to each other about this. I know it's hard, believe me I do, but he's gonna need you to back him up just as much as you need him. Good luck with it all x
