okay, you can all stop laughing at me now, i want some advice.

hello, i said stop laughing!

okay fine, you can laugh at me but you gotta help me out :(

i want to date while i'm back in the bay area this summer, and i don't want to be set up by friends because that always goes poorly. i'm thinking about putting up a personal ad at an online site. however, i don't just want some random person to fuck. how does one go about putting together a non sleezy personal ad?

and yes, i can still hear you laughing...

hehehehehehehe
(trying to hold it in)

Just playing with you!

I would date you but well um distance is kind of an issue.
I will take you out on the town if you happen to stop by Chicago this summer though!

Depends on the site, I find. (Not that I've tried just oodles of 'em, though.) Some are set up really nicely. A friend of mine dotes on www.lavalife.com though I recommend www.lovelyone.net myself. Many even offer free trials, or free service with the option to upgrade to paid service and more choices. I've even put up a "personal ad" there to meet new people (not necessarily love interests), and it's gone quite well. In fact, I've been chatting with one gentleman in particular for at least a month now, had a phone call or two, and will be having a cup of coffee with him tomorrow evening.

If you want to see what "worked" (;)) for me, PM me, and I'll send you the exact address of my ad.

Good luck!

Lexie, depending on what part of the Bay Area you are from, I've been hearing good things about a company called Table For 6. It's a singles thing, and it's not too pressured, since you have that many people. Just remember, with your friends, even though they may misjudge, they know you and your tastes, so you don't have to worry about finding a way to explain who the hell you are.

If you are intent on posting a personal, how about something like:
"Age/Female looking for a friend to go out with while home for the summer. Interests. Restrictions. People with strictly physical interests need not apply." ?

If it makes you feel better, those of us who are in the Area don't have much luck finding local love interests either!

thanks for the offers guys, but i wasn't trying to drum up sympathy, just some ideas about how to avoid being trite and stupid.

i'm sort of embarassed to have to resort to this. maybe it's a bad idea.

I think a respected local newspaper with a personals section might be a better idea than using the Internet. I just have a feeling.

Lexie- "resort"? I've been doing to online dating thing for a while, and it's pretty much become the norm in NY. The dating service I've used for the longest time is lavalife, and I've met some cool people on there. Of course, I've gotten the duds too, but that's inevitable IRL as well. You can PM me too, if you want, and I can send you the addy of my ad there.

One good thing about Lavalife is that they have three separate sections to put ads in: dating, intimate, and romance. You can put yours in one section, two of them or all three for free. To write to people you buy credits, or let them contact you. It's pretty easy.

(Btw, in the intimate section they have a thing where you check the boxes that apply as to what you like- you can list "domination and submission" in there :) ).

I think it's very important to be up front about what you are looking for: just friends, fuckfriends, casual dating, something serious, etc....

My ad is pretty straightforward, and I have a lot of men contact me telling me that they like that I'm so honest. My ad is in the dating section of the site- oh, and I don't have a pic posted for everyone there to see. If people ask, and they have a picture to give me, I grant them access to my backstage where my pics are. I like the way that works.
