1. They are more worried about symbolic gestures than public policy.
2. They had it great in the Obama years as well as in the present administration, so they just want normalcy back.
3. They don’t actually oppose Trump on issues like the military budget, but they rip up his speech and try to impeach him for something like Ukraine rather than something like war crimes, sexual assault, fraud, or emoluments.
4. They pretend that they are progressive while drone bombing tons of people, expanding two illegal wars of aggression into four, collecting metadata on people, worshipping the neocon Bush Republicans, deporting more immigrants than your Republican predecessor, separating families, putting kids in cages, putting neocon Republicans front and center at the convention and at their favorite neoliberal networks, and calling whistleblowers traitors.
5. Even slightly populist rhetoric, even the insincere, offends them, but war, surveillance, and poverty are fine by them.
6. They focus more on beating the left than on defeating their general election opponents.
7. Tribalism and party loyalty matter most to them. Even mild criticism is intolerable if directed at the party elders. And don’t dare run for the nomination unless you are an official Democrat, even if the voters want you and you caucus with Democrats in the Senate. And bipartisanship can only be allowed when Saint Nancy allows it. Otherwise it’s treason. And she only allows it in order to help the rich or hurt the poor.
8. Their foreign policy is now to the right of Bush. War is good now.
9. Cultural wedge issues are enough to call yourself liberal nowadays. You don’t need to help the working class, because screw them. They voted for Trump and can never be won back, so let’s punish them and focus on suburban moderates, especially soccer moms and lifelong Republicans.
10. Meeting foreign dictators is only okay if it suits the present narrative. Otherwise, it makes you an apologist, even if Pelosi once did it and you are just trying to learn what is really going on in the place.
11. It’s okay to put in lots of pork for the banks and corporations, as long as you feed the poor some table scraps and it’s okay to play chicken with the stimulus as long as someone else gets all of the blame.
12. There is never enough money for single payer, but always enough to bail out Wall Street and wage more wars.
