How to sleep better

I’m an insomniac. I rarely sleep through the night. I think I have good sleep habits. I go to bed around the same time every night.

I am 55, I eat well, lots of fruit, veggies, and not too close to bedtime. Im in decent shape and work out 3-4x a week.

I’ve started doing yoga stretches and also meditation before bedtime.

I’ve tried getting high, I’ve tried cbd, melatonin, masturbating when I wake up or go to bed. I’ve tried staying off of my phone and being on my phone.

I am a very light sleeper and also unfortunately have ptsd. I wake up almost every morning at 2-330am.

Any tips or advice you all have on staying asleep or getting back to sleep when you wake up?

EDIT: I am doing much better in the sleep department and managing myself mentally and holistically. But this is a great thread for sharing tips for sleeping better.

While I’m sleeping better these days, I can’t say it’s great.
I recently bought a watch. A Garmin vivoactive 6. Has really good sleep sensing features, including random naps. My average sleep is 5h22m In almost 2 months, I haven't had a "good" rating on my sleep score. "Poor quality, non-restorative, no REM, no deep cycle, non-restorative." My "body battery" has only once or twice been above 50% and that was after taking pain killers, melatonin, oatmeal, magnesium, 5htp, and muscle relaxer with chamomile. And I was still up 5 or 6 times to pee, eat, and stare at the ceiling for about 2 hours in the middle of the night. Which is less than my usual 3-5 hours of staring, and then it's time to get up. So I pass out, and I mean pass the f out around 7-8pm. Then I wake up around 11pm to get my kids to bed, make sure lights are off, doors locked, dogs fed, all that, eat, pee, and go back to sleep on the couch because now I'm so sensitive to noise that I can't stand my husband breathing. I might fall asleep until 2-3am, but that's it. Wake up at 3, and I have to pee probably a half dozen times, maybe even poop. It doesn't matter when I eat or drink, nothing changes the body urges, I'm ALWAYS hungry. I have no appetite all day, but I'm unable to fill up at night. It leaves me so exhausted and irritated. I don't believe that we don't digest while we sleep because otherwise we wouldn't be so hungry!

The best thing I did was getting a Japanese buckwheat hull pillow. Absolutely amazing. I used a thin foam sound proofing square to make it soft enough for my face, but I love the firmness. neck pain is all gone. But I still don't sleep through the night! If anyone figures it out, I'm super happy to hear it. What can I eat to stay full all night because I've tried everything including all you can eat sushi at 7pm straight to pass out and wake up starving at 3am even though I can eat sushi at 11am and not be hungry again until... 3am! So many of my health issues are becoming serious problems because of my lack of sleep.

Have you spoken with or seen a doctor abt this? Perhaps they have some recommendations.

That sounds really rough.

Uhhhh, not really. I'm an American. first of all, insurance or riches are required to see a doctor. Secondly, the doctor has only three options: it's all in your head and you're faking it, you're fat, or here's a severely overpriced pill designed to make you sicker so big pharma has more money. Personally, I've seen *literally* over a hundred doctor in my life and not once have I been helped. My medical trauma is so intense at this point, I have panic attacks making appointments because I already know the doctor will totally dismiss me. I haven't been in the same room with a doctor for longer than 5 minutes in the past 25 years. About 15 years ago, my dog ran into me and I heard my knee crack and it got swollen to the size of a soccer ball. 3 different doctors told me I was fat and if I lost weight, the swelling wouldn't have happened. they refused to believe it was a dog because I'm 50 lbs overweight, and that's a death sentence for Healthcare in this country. Fat people cannot get Healthcare at all. I had a kidney stone that was stuck for 4 years, causing me pain and infection and fever off and on. I was told all of it would go away if I lost weight. I only found out about the kidney stone because of the worst ultrasound job ever, and was then told by my doctor that the stone "wasn't concerning" and he gave me blood pressure medicine because I'm constantly at stroke levels. That medicine made me pee so much that it broke the kidney stone loose and 4 years of debilitating overwhelming agony was gone. The doctor refuses to admit that the kidney stone could have caused this pain even though it's now gone because the stone is gone. No doctor has ever given me more than a glance, because skinny people are just incapable of being sick and fat people are incapable of having any other health issues but fatness. I'm DEEPLY and devastatingly traumatized by Healthcare. That's why I'd rather ask the internet. I'll trust writers of smut before doctors. I'll trust the AI before doctors. It would be nice if I could find a doctor that didn't bring up fatness and just took care of issues, but that would take money from insurance companies so they aren't allowed to do that, not even when you pay in cash.

I’m so sorry to hear that. 🫤

Yes, the us medical system is beyond fucked. It’s irreparably broken.

There are many good sleep tips on this thread. I hope you get some good ideas from some of them to improve your sleep.

Have you seen a sleep doctor?
Ask around for referrals in your area.
Not sleeping can make a person gain weight.

Just my two cent here,I know a couple of people who"ve had success with a slightly inconventional method. They have their mistress use a very calm but firm and authoratative tone to basically 'order'them to unwind, relax each musle, and give them permission to switch off.yes,it sound strange but surrendering that mental control to a trusted one'DOM' can really help the brain shut down for a deeper sleep.
and before you talk down on my method know that in the military i have been privileged to witness lot of method usage to cure people that hospitals cant
I believe this works but it depends on a person being able to enter subspace. I’m fascinated by the concept but Dom is where I feel more comfortable and I am not knowledgeable enough to help someone into subspace (possibly not perceptive enough in any event).

We sound like twins. Sorry, I don't have any tips, other than when I'm on the boat, I keep an empty water jug in my stateroom for when I wake up to pee... reason being, if I walk out into the bright light, I'm doomed and NOT going back to sleep.

I pulled my typical unhealthy sleep maneuver tonight. It happens most often in the darker months (NOV - FEB).

I fell asleep on the couch after dinner. Slept from 8-1030pm. Now pretty awake.

  1. I will get off my phone shortly.
  2. Read a book.
  3. Listen to my lofi sleep mix
  4. Practice mindfulness (try not to think about things I can’t control)

I’ll let ya know how it works…

Have you tried sleeping naked? It's incredibly calming, it helps me relax when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep.
