Getting back to the "spirit" of the thread, an update:

The online campaign to "out" ms_intrigue has picked up its own momentum, and now the blogs, timelines and other information out there is showing up in search engines. As we all know, anyone, including friends, romantic interests, employers, etc. is likely to Google your name at some point. What's on the Internet really is forever, despite the comforting blanket that anonymity can provide for a time; she will have some explaining to do for a very long time.

No word yet on anything else concerning her, but I am getting the disappointing impression that she has not done what she should; rather, she is still fighting hard to cover her tracks. I expected nothing better of her, of course, but I did have hopes that she would take at least some measure of responsibility for her actions.

So that's the update, for those who still care about it. :)

Boo HH. I understand your need for making her pay. But in all honesty, this is a little much. You really want her to forever be ruined? Why wouldn't she try to cover her tracks here. How would you like it if someone permanently plastered your mistakes on the Internet?

I've made plenty of mistakes. I don't mind the world knowing that. Because it happens, people make mistakes. The question is whether people take responsibility for their mistakes -- do they own that mistake? Do they admit what they did and grow from it? Or do they scramble to hide it?

If you own the things you do, then you have nothing to worry about. When someone asks you a question about these things they found online, you simply take a deep breath and say, yes, I did that. It was a long time ago. I'm a different person now. And you show them, through your actions, that you have changed.

But if you continuously hide the things you do, sweep them under the rug, make up stories to justify it all...those things aren't owning your actions. They are trying to find excuses for your actions. That says you might have changed, but not for the better.

And...Shane McGowan? That might work if I were Irish!

It makes sense that you feel that way. But if you were embarking on a new romantic relationship, looking for a new job or even making a new friend who got curious about what was online about you, and they questioned you about your past actions, what then? That's no longer some random person.

It seems that in order to move forward with whichever of the above situations are you in, you would have a responsibility to accept the things you did and prove that you have changed (assuming you have). The result if you don't own up to those mistakes can be that you lose the potential job, romantic partner, friend, etc.

In short: Owning what you did sometimes means explaining what you did. Sweeping it under the rug or lying about it after the fact means that you're not owning it -- you're avoiding it. And I believe that speaks volumes about character, or the lack thereof.
