IRA starts decommissioning 'to save peace process'
The IRA has announced it has begun decommissioning its weapons "to save the
peace process".
The leadership confirmed it would be following the procedure to put guns and
explosives beyond use.
A statement said the move, agreed earlier this year with General John de Chastelain,
was a bid to save the peace process.
It added: "Our motivation is clear. This unprecedented move is to save the peace
process and to persuade others of our genuine intentions."
The move came 24 hours after Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said he had asked
the IRA to disarm and prevent the collapse of the Good Friday Agreement.
The Provisionals had been under enormous pressure from London, Dublin and
Washington to act. The IRA insisted there was a responsibility on everyone
committed to do their best to avoid a breakdown.
Last August, following the resignation of David Trimble as First Minister at the
Northern Ireland Assembly, the Provisionals agreed a method of putting their
weaponry beyond use. The agreement was withdrawn when Unionists demanded
immediate decommissioning.
The I RA has given no details of how many of their guns had been decommissioned
but General de Chastelain is likely to have recorded a full inventory.
Two of their secret dumps had been examined three times by government-appointed
arms inspectors Cyril Ramaphosa and Martti Ahtisaari.
Their statement said: "No one should doubt the difficulties these initiatives cause for
us, our volunteers and our support base. The political process is now on the point of
collapse. Such a collapse would certainly, and eventually, put the overall peace
process in jeopardy."
The above is a breaking story here in the UK and a joy to those of us who wish to see peace in Ireland, what it doesn't mention though is the fact that it's the USA that has really made the IRA get rid of their gun's.
The US was going to make the Sinn Fein a banned terrorist organisation, this scared the IRA so much they decided to get rid of their gun's.....and why were the IRA scared....money, if they became banned in the US then they would lose their biggest provider of money.
The US Govt has no time since 9/11 for any terrorist group and with three IRA men having been arrested helping commies in Colombia the IRA where shitting them selves the money would dry up.
What ever the right or wrongs of the past this is a good day for the people of Ireland who more than anybody want to live in peace.
