how stupid can you get?

People put way too much faith in their technology these days. I barely even use a cell phone. I was visiting my brother last month in the city and he depended on his GPS so much that he neglected to look at obvious signs. We would have been to the festival 1/2 hour earlier had we done it my way...

you are the kind of backseat driver i would not mind driving.

From the article...the three set out to drive to North Stradbroke Island.

IT'S AN ISLAND!!

Idiots.

People who post just a link with no explanation are pretty fucking stupid

In fairness, when this story broke, the media tested several GPS units and all of them gave the same instructions the Japanese got.
Seems they all say you can drive to the island.

If you don't speak English well, I can see how easily this could happen.

It was a very low tide, and the mud flats would have looked dry.
If you've ever been to Oz, you'd know that a lot of tourist destinations are off the beaten track and sometimes you have to go 'bush' to get to them.
Oh, and the road they took actually did go all the way down to the mud.

just to the mud. i've driven plenty of places where i stop and think, no, i am not going through that. but common sense isn't so common.

And Google maps says to swim across the ocean to get from place to place. Doesn't mean you actually do it.

I know a road in DFW that dead ends on one side of the interstate, then starts again on the other side. GPS units show the road as going under the interstate. It never failed that at least once a month, someone would not stop and then they run into guard rail. There is a reason for the 'Dead End' signs and guard rail.
