How soon can you take pregancy test?

I'm just a few days late, although I'm not entirely sure what's going on. There has been a little bit of spotting for the past 3 days. It could just be slow in coming, but this isn't typical for me. I'm pretty regular and usually get maybe a half day of spotting before it starts...

So how soon are those test accurate?

I think they're pretty good LadyJ. I recall one saying it can detect a pregnancy after about 24 hours. One ad states ''we'll know the moment of conception,'' which just doesn't appeal to me. I haven't used one in years so I'm assuming they're better now a days.

Interesting thread oh LadyJ! :rose:

I've never used a test...never had to in 18 years of having sex. Can you believe that?

That's why I'm a little unclear on what's going on. I wouldn't get any spotting if I were pregnant, would I?

Interesting? That would be an understatement, I think...

Hi LJ,

It's been many, many years since my wife used such a test, so I have nothing to offer you, except to say that I hope things work out for you in whatever manner you wish. :rose:
ditto. :) :rose:

well, except for the wife part... and the using a test part... ok... just lop off that whole first half of the 2nd paragraph.

I'm not sure about spotting. It doesn't sound out of the ordinary to me. Not to be nosey, but could you be in peri-menopause? My cycle began changing with things like you've mentioned, it got weirder too. I'd trust the test and make an appointment with the doc.

I wish you the best too, the best for you all. :rose:

Thanks, Scaly. This certainly wasn't part of the plan...not that we have any plans for anything...

I'm having a little trouble breathing, actually.

Thanks, sweets.

I don't know - you just hear people say, I missed my period, not that there was a little spotting.

Peri-menopause? At 38?

i'm not one to really speak here... but i don't think that's too far out of the norm. i never paid that much attention to these sorts of things. i just know that when i'm in a relationship i find things under the bathroom sink that i can't remember buying, have no use for and surely didn't put there myself.

Oh yes, it can be peri, that phase can last as long as 10 years. I'm 44, in menopause and am close to post menopause (however they determine it). After all those years it's like a slap in the face. Not nice and we did nothin' to deserve it. ;)

It's possible that it's implantation bleeding. A home pregnancy test should be accurate by this point, so I would say go ahead and take one. If nothing else it will give you an answer on that front.

LadyJ,

To answer the spotting question: Yes, it is possible to have light spotting when you are pregnant; it's actually fairly common early on.

It could also be peri-menopause, even as early as 38.

EPT say they are 99% accurate after the first expected day of your period, an epinion user stated that the Accu-Clear Early Pregnancy Test was easier to handle and use and was the best of the three she had sampled.

Well, I went out and bought a test. Can't bring myself to take it, though, and I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe in the morning if my period doesn't get in gear by then.

The last time I looked at those things it said 1-3 weeks after conception it's possible to know. So assuming it's been at least a week the test will know if you are or not.

However as has been said, it might be time for that change. Personally, I hope it ends up being what you want it being. ;)

Thanks, everyone. My period got going earlier, so need for a test.
Glad you've got an answer! A friend of mine had an experience with this recently, so I'll share in the interest of diversity (and maybe someone can explain it).

At about a week and a half late (say, Day 40 in her cycle), she used a test that claimed 99.99% accuracy a few days after the expected period. That was negative, so she figured it was just stress or a screwy cycle.

She felt like she was on the cusp of her period week after week, and hadn't had any fertility signs (yes, we talk about this stuff) since early in her cycle. Around week 10, she started vomiting, and took another test, first thing in the morning. That was a clear positive. A subsequent test was also positive. Why it didn't come up positive in the first place is still a mystery.

So, if I'm ever late week after week and the first test is negative, I'll probably test at weekly intervals or go in for the blood test, just to be sure.

If I'm not mistaken, those tests read levels of certain hormones in the urine. If the hormone levels aren't high enough, and I think in early pregnancy, that would be the case, it might read it as negative. Just a possibility.

You're not mistaken. :D

I wonder if the hormone surge in early stages just isn't as strong for some women or pregnancies. Hmm...I'll have to ask my doctor when I go in for that long overdue PAP next month. *grimaces*
