the little smilies et al that are in the second column of the thread listing? I believe this can not be done by me. Also, what factor is used to determine which one's are put on which threads? Or am I being really dunb here and the answer is staring me in the face?

When you start a new thread, you have the same 14 choices for an "icon" that you do when you reply to a post. Just click on the circle next to the icon you want displayed next to your thread.
Whatever icon is selected by the thread starter, is the one that displays in the thread listing. the ones selected for a reply are only displyed at the beginning of that reply.
