Homophobia

If the roots of the word are examined, "homophobia" would be "fear of the same", or fear of a thing similar to oneself.

The root homo- is from the Greek, not Latin, where "homo" means man.

Homo (actually homeo) is from the Greek. It means "the same."

Homo from Latin means "human being."

We all know what phobia means.

(This would make a great beer drinking argument)

Now, let's tackle the latest pseudo word: Islamaphobia. Just kidding.

Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal?

Abstract

The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who admitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. Participants consisted of a group of homophobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980). The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored. They also completed an Aggression Questionnaire (A. H. Buss & M. Perry, 1992). Both groups exhibited increases in penile circumference to the heterosexual and female homosexual videos. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. The groups did not differ in aggression. Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.

Homophobia is associated with gibberish.

I don't disagree. I simply have the opinion that "homophobia" is not the correct word.

Okay. Then I will just think of you as a bigoted gay hating asshole. Better?

Edit: I bet your dick gets hard when you watch gay porn too!

Okay, here's a question: What word or phrase would describe your general feelings about homosexuals?

Is their sexual identity a variation of human nature, of no particular significance when considering an individual?

Do you believe they are a deviation from the norms of society, or a perversion of healthy sexual identities.

Feel free to add any other description, if needed.

I think homophobia is mostly a cultural phenomenon. If a culture has very distinct gender distinctions, then anything that is "unmanly" or "effeminate" is a threat to ones male identity and status.

When I was growing up, "effiminate" and "sissy" were about the worst things you could say about a guy.

Do I get burned at the stake if I give the "wrong" answers?

God made homosexuals, like he made everything else. I'm cool with that, no axe to grind, etc, etc. I can't believe people are still discussing this shit.
Oh, yeah. Some of my best friends are queers.

If you give answers that make you sound like an ignorant asshole, I will deduce that you're an ignorant asshole, yes.

Then don't pick the axe up in the first place, huh?

Believe it. Not only are people still discussing it, people are still being hurt.
Oh, yeah. Some of my best friends are queers.
And some queers are not your best friends.

In fact, most of them aren't.

A gay man is always afraid of his gaiety before he accepts his sexual leaning.

I laughed. I don't think I've ever seen "gaiety" used in that connotation. That's precious. :D

(And, I think, shows how alien this discussion is to LaRocha, no doubt to his great relief.)

Well, now I'm gonna pour myself a glass of beer. And cry in it.
Hahahahahahahahahahah!

I hope no one thinks it's homophobic of me just to think that dick is unappealing. I'm not bothered in the least by what people choose to do in private but don't want to see it.
If I click a link and man on man porn shows up, it gets closed quickly. Simply not my cup of tea.

God didn't make homosexuals or anything else. Homosexuality is still a magical mystery in biology.

homosexual (adj.) Look up homosexual at Dictionary.com
1892, in C.G. Chaddock's translation of Krafft-Ebing's "Psychopathia Sexualis," from homo-, comb. form of Gk. homos "same" (see same) + Latin-based sexual (see sex).

"Homosexual" is a barbarously hybrid word, and I claim no responsibility for it. [H. Havelock Ellis, "Studies in Psychology," 1897]

The noun is first recorded 1912 in English, 1907 in French. In technical use, either male or female; but in non-technical use almost always male. Slang shortened form homo first attested 1929.

Bullshit. That is a environmental/learned response to a person's surroundings. Now that being "gay" is much more acceptable than it was, MANY young men and women never even go into the closet or feel fear. It just is what they ARE.

Puberty is universal anxiety over sexuality, everyone faces the same anxiety. So anyone who says they don't face fear and anxiety during puberty is probably not being honest; gay, trans, or plain. Traditionally, gay and trans people experience more fear and anxiety during puberty and into post-adolescence due to our culture's inability to ready them for a nontraditional role. Regardless, every gay man is at least as afraid as every straight man until each accepts their sexuality.

If homosexuality is biology, certainly is, then it will always be a small percentage of the population. Anyone who's a part of a smaller group has a reason to fear what the bigger part of the society is up to regarding them. Something like marriage is the unnecessary rendering of sexuality into law. Government shouldn't have anything to do with favoring any type of sex patterns.

I agree with sr71 plt. I can't take anyone seriously that uses the term "gaiety" (especially when they reframe the entire context of their prior statement to make it fit.)

It's obvious that you are speaking down to us from that "straight" backed chair that you sit on up on your self perceived pedestal. To you this is some theoretical discussion, but to us it is OUR FREAK'IN LIVES, which you clearly know nothing about.

Check out androgen insensitivity syndrome and Gerald Edelman's thoughts about molecular embryology. Organisms are like Tinker Toys that fit together in many ways. And traits always regress to the mean if the organism breeds.

This is a matter of who gets burned at the stake, but it won't be you. You also will not be the one who is beaten and left to die, tied to a barb wire fence in the snow. Later, the men who did not assault will not plead they feared you wanted to have sex with them.

It's a strange defense, but when a man wants to touch your penis, its a frightening thing and sometimes the only response is to beat him to death and take his money, so you can buy more meth.

People are discussing this shit because it is a relevant issue. Disputing the meaning of a the commonly understood word "homophobia" is disingenuous. Your argument sounds like, "homophobia does not mean fear of homosexuals, therefore, there is no such thing."

Thank you, Bronzeage.

I find it hard to believe anyone needs it spelled out so carefully--I just assume he's being a troll.

AIS usually means infertility. The sad thing is, the Sioux and various Native Indians were able to deal successfully with transgender people and made them fit into their society as is. Hormone treatment and surgery, making the individual more male or more female, isn't a healthy solution to the issue.

The Indians had a dual-spirit construct to account for homos.

The mere fact that American football is based on dudes standing behind other dudes asses and waiting for them to pass the ball wasn't enough of an indication? It's nothing we hadn't suspected before.

AIS in itself has very little to do with homophobia. The fact that AIS comes up in these discussions sometimes has to do with homophobia.

Also, most homosexuals are not transgendered. Many transgendered people would be heterosexual, if they had been born in the "right body."

Although some (but not all by any means) native tribes had a place for trans people, they also dealt with gay people by assigning them to a transgendered role. If you were a manly man who preferred men you might be able to find a winkte to take as your "wife." The idea that a manly man might actually want to be with another manly man doesn't seem to have had much currency-- or maybe just one of those details that didn't survive the white man.

Women of course... much easier for them to love another woman. Two women living together is easily interpreted as 'a pair of spinsters."
