Everybody knows what the pseudo-word "homophobia" connotes. That is not the same as what it means literally: fear of human beings.

Human beings are exactly what homophobes are afraid of.

If the roots of the word are examined, "homophobia" would be "fear of the same", or fear of a thing similar to oneself.

The root homo- is from the Greek, not Latin, where "homo" means man.

Homo (actually homeo) is from the Greek. It means "the same."

Homo from Latin means "human being."

We all know what phobia means.

Now, let's tackle the latest pseudo word: Islamaphobia. Just kidding.

The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who admitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. The groups did not differ in aggression. Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.

I think homophobia is mostly a cultural phenomenon. If a culture has very distinct gender distinctions, then anything that is "unmanly" or "effeminate" is a threat to ones male identity and status.

When I was growing up, "effiminate" and "sissy" were about the worst things you could say about a guy.

This is a matter of who gets burned at the stake, but it won't be you. You also will not be the one who is beaten and left to die, tied to a barb wire fence in the snow. Later, the men who did not assault will not plead they feared you wanted to have sex with them.

It's a strange defense, but when a man wants to touch your penis, its a frightening thing and sometimes the only response is to beat him to death and take his money, so you can buy more meth.

AIS in itself has very little to do with homophobia. The fact that AIS comes up in these discussions sometimes has to do with homophobia.

Also, most homosexuals are not transgendered. Many transgendered people would be heterosexual, if they had been born in the "right body."

Although some (but not all by any means) native tribes had a place for trans people, they also dealt with gay people by assigning them to a transgendered role. If you were a manly man who preferred men you might be able to find a winkte to take as your "wife." The idea that a manly man might actually want to be with another manly man doesn't seem to have had much currency-- or maybe just one of those details that didn't survive the white man.

Women of course... much easier for them to love another woman. Two women living together is easily interpreted as 'a pair of spinsters."
