U.S. orders B-52 strikes in Afghanistan

KABUL -- U.S. troops called in air strikes from a mammoth B-52 bomber yesterday after coming under fire in a region where forces loyal to rival warlords fought fierce battles in western Afghanistan, American and Afghan officials said. No U.S. soldiers were injured, but the factional fighting killed at least 11 Afghans.

A convoy of U.S. special forces was patrolling near Shindand air base in the west of the country when they stopped to investigate a group of armed Afghan men on the roadside, said U.S. military spokesman Colonel Roger King. When the patrol stopped, the Afghans opened fire, he said.

The Americans returned fire, then called for air support as they escaped under attack, Col. King said.

The B-52 dropped seven 907-kilogram laser-guided bombs.

Seven 2,000 pound laser guided bombs from a B-52 to hit a roadside patrol and kill 11 in Afghanistan....Wonder how much THAT costs?
