i was just wondering what people thought about the
genre of historical fiction in erotica, and if anyone had any good ideas. There's a number of ways it could go, such as a story that simply is based in a specific time period, or relates to a historical event. Maybe even something that involves historical figues.

It's nothing new, but I think its kinda cool...

i think its a bit too intellectually demanding - you need to be a scholar in history to pull it off well. then again you could base a porno story around just historical events as you suggested and not be too anally retentive with the details. i think its a good idea but you'll not get me anywhere near it for quite a while

As you may have suspected, there are a number of such stories. The two best which come to mind are: The Ravishing of Constance by Sabledrake, which is based on piracy in the Spanish Main, and Surrender by Dragonette, which is mediaeval warfare.
Need I say that I have no connection with either of those author(esse)s?

If you consider WWII as history, then there are a number of stories based on German and/or Russian atrocities.

Historical fiction is no more difficult to write than any other type of fiction. That assumes you have a good command of the facts and a few good reference books to research anything you come upon where your knowledge fails you.

It is far easier to base a fictional work in a particular time period than it is to use an actual historical personage. A period piece need only be factually correct in the details of the character's lives and in the settings, backgrounds and action you portray. With a personality from the period you must also be true to that person's known traits, appearance, and actions.

Of course with erotica you are not usually aiming for the highbrow intellectual who will debate with you minor inconsistancies. Your average stroke reader won't debate with you whether your pirate should have a matchlock, wheelock or flintlock pistol. He is only intrested in it as a prop to get the lady Hildegart's dress off.

If you want to write historically based erotic fiction the only real difference is that you have to have at least a good working knowledge of the period. The further you stray from the facts, the more likely you are to get a feedback or two telling you you are full of it. If however you write hot sex scenes and build engaging characters you will not be held to a high standard for accuracy by most readers.

I love stories that place you in another time period. For one I sometimes need to excape even if it is only in my mind. Second I thrive on picking up the mistakes (just something I do) so write it close to the facts or be cautious. Many readers do not like BS. if it challenges what they know, and if the author writes it he can be excused from minor BS but blatent BS will be a part of the perception of every story you write from then on.

Example if you write about about old days in Cuba and say this, this and that happened to Whomever, that are not in the history books that is fine. It could have happened. If you write a factual statement that could not have happened you threaten your credibility. Like the reason why so and so tried to excape was because Sadam was trying to get a foot hold on the USA way back but most people did not know it. That is an "overkill example" but people do not like twisting the facts of known history.

If you goof and say she was dressed in a Ralph Lauren knit shirt, or pulled out his digital camera. Most will know it was not available at the time but let it pass if an article of the same nature was available in this time. Microwaves and Personal computers were not.

Colleen Thomas Has written an excellent short story about the Caribean, It has skirted some major issues with time and what would be available by being set on a boat 90%. The story does give an excellent feeling of what it would have been like if I was a butter fly just watching. Her facts are strong and for the most part what history tells us was occuring at that time. The remainder of the tale I gather was not true, but fit the possibility of yeah this could have played out without history knowing.

My last mention is if you read a book like the "Diary of Ann Frank" You are not only transported in time and have the feel for real history. You also Know the characters around you, very hard to time travel in the mind without feelings and good metaphors/Similie to agitate the senses. This is not an easy task for they too should be a reference of the past If your POV is in the past, then the past is the present.

I wish there was an entire category for historical erotica on here. Personally, I tend to find stories set in another era somehow much more intriguing than those set in the modern day.

snooper > thanks for the kind words! Check out "Emma," my attempt at an Old West tale ;)

Another great example I've seen on here is by MlleLePlumeBleu. My computer's acting up so I can't get a link or recall the title right offhand, but it was set at a monastary and was one of the best pieces of historical erotica I've ever read.

I'll have to check out "Emma". I wrote one (called "I'm Going to Make You Come") set in the "old west". I love that time period!

There was a discussion some months back on this topic. I think it was started by Svenskaflicka.

Speaking of "time machine"....I love time travel historical romance stories! Not "time machine", really, but when the characters somehow wind up either backward or forward in time.

I would love to write a story about someone coming forward from the days of the Old West to modern times. I sometimes think about what it would be like for the people involved if that did happen. The changes that have occurred between then and now! It would be awesome to give an old cowboy or farmer, or a woman from then, a tour of life today.

Well the good thing about history is that there is so much of it. Meaning that there are too many opportunities to turn into sexual scenarios. Examples:

First time - with Elizabeth I
Gay Male - with Alexander the Great
How to . . . er rewrite Ovid's Art of Love as a sex manual
Lesbian Sex - Sappho and her adventures
Mind Control - ra ra Rasputin and Alexandra of Russia
NonHuman - sex with Mummies in Ancient Egypt
Romance - Antony and Cleopatra
Sci-Fi & Fantasy - delve into classic myths
Toys & Masturbation - Victorian man inventing the first vibrator
Transsexuals & Crossdressers - J. Edgar Hoover

Too many to go through. I'd like to see it tried, again.

Isn't that incest rather than non-human?
