"Historic Storm"

I'd love to see these mountain folks that works fine for but lets say that it does, those are special bred bad asses. And 90% of people are idiots by this standard.

Come to NorCal I'll introduce you to all sorts of folks in Shasta/Trinity/Tahoe that live with feet of snow regularly.

Ever been to Alaska? Minnesota? Idaho? Wyoming? How do they make it!!

Dude it's just snow and cold.....you bundle up, breakout the heaters/fire, hot coco and ride it out. If you NEED to get to the store you roll the bro dozer with chains. It's not rocket science, millions of M'uricans do it every year. It's really not that big of a crisis unless someone can't figure out how to stay warm.

If they can't stay warm without gubbmint telling them...wellllll JUST MAYBE......they deserve to freeze to death.

I have been to Alaska, and have a friend who lives up there. They do NOT have feet of snow regularly. Alaska doesn't average that much snow. There is a world of difference between 16 inches in a MONTH and thirty inches in A DAY. I challenge you to show me anyplace in California EVER that has gotten half that much snow in a 48 hour period.

This is no different from any other natural disaster.

Comparing a blizzard to regular snowfall accumulation is like comparing a hurricane to afternoon summer showers in Florida.

Sure, Orlando might get average 20 inches of rain over a three month summer and it's no big deal. Get an umbrella and galoshes, but if all of that drops in a matter of two days they're fucked with a capital F.

It builds up to several feet deep...for months on end and it's every bit as bitter cold as NY.

Granted not in a day but you still handle it the same way. Bundle up and ride it out...like I said it's not rocket science, it's just a snow storm. As as long as power lines stay up and everyone stays in no one will die.

This is no different from any other natural disaster.

Except it's not really a disaster, hundeds of homes are not going to be washed out to sea or blown off the face of the map. You're not generally fucked and likely dead just for being in the general area...

The biggest risk is ice building up on power lines and taking them down. In which case you bundle up and start a fire, like a non-retard. The other but unlikely risk is that the day after will be 90F and cause flash flooding.

Otherwise the only people at risk are the disabled and totally fucking retarded. Fire up the hot coco, make it a blockbuster night and ride it out, shovel the shit and life goes on.

Only if it all melts at one time.....

You don't live where it snows much do you?

Nearly 60 million people will be affected...and many live in the city. It's apples and oranges in your comparison. Chances of someone living out in the country having backup heat and electric, or being able to better live without them are much greater, wouldn't you think?

Building up isn't the same, for starters the snow plows can keep the roads clear, you don't literally get trapped in your home, the electricity is much less likely to go out and business for the most part can continue. Nobody ever got trapped by a foot of snow over a month and as a result couldn't go get more food.

I guess we can argue that it's not a natural disaster because. . .not a hurricane. I mean by the standard your setting an Earthquake is even LESS dangerous than a blizzard. Basically it either kills you outright (which is actually shoddy construction/stupid decorating choices because something fell on you) or you've got zero to worry about.

So it's a crisis of unprepared stupid and piss poor planning for living where they live? Sounds legit.

I had snow days as a kid...snow fell and shit shut down for the reasons you're stating. We plowed/shoveled the shit and life went on.

Mother fuckers don't have more than a days worth of food? They got bigger problems than the snow...

No it's not a natural disaster because not anywhere near as destructive. Snow? Crush a few shitty mobile homes and slow bidnizz down for a bit. It doesn't level the city.....

Nah, I'm just living in one of the states currently under a state of emergency.

Well then you better go get your gubbmint info pamphlet telling you to grab some food and blankets for the coming storm, or you could DIE!! LMFAO.

Tough shit, that what we pay taxes for. Get the fuck outta here.

And you don't like it when they're spent inefficiently, do you? Telling everybody to stay inside during a natural emergency is the cheapest way to handle it.

It does look like a big 'un.

At around 3:30 a.m. on Monday, the National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings throughout the Northeast, including in Boston, Hartford, Providence and New York City, for what the organization is calling a “crippling and potentially historic blizzard” which is expected to really begin Monday evening into Tuesday. The the announcement says to expect heavy snow and blowing snow with blizzard conditions, with snow accumulation from 18 to 24 inches and possibly higher in New York, and up to 36 inches in Boston and Providence, temperatures in the low 20s and wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour.

The warning for New York City reads:

Light snow will begin this morning… with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches possible by sunset. Snow will pick up in intensity Monday evening… with the heaviest snow and strongest winds from about midnight into Tuesday afternoon.

Impacts… Life-threatening conditions and extremely dangerous travel due to heavy snowfall and strong winds… with whiteout conditions. Many roads may become impassable. Strong winds may down power lines and tree limbs.

So it's a crisis of unprepared stupid and piss poor planning for living where they live? Sounds legit.

Yeah, you're right. 50 million people really should have generators and piles of wood stacked up in their one bedroom apartments in the middle of some of the biggest cities in the world.

At issue here is Vetteman running around like Henny Fucking Penny because the Governor declared a state of emergency and told people to stay off the roads for their own safety or face prosecution (mostly for hindering clearing efforts and endangering others). In short, hunker down and ride it out, don't be an asshole and go out in 40-50 MPH winds and whiteout conditions.

How you got from there to "it's not a natural disaster" I'm not quite sure. We are talking about 40-50 MPH winds and 4-6" of snow per hour. That's a blizzard by anyone's definition, and definitely life threatening if you manage to get caught out in it. Hence the reason for the State of emergency and travel restrictions.

It's a state of emergency because the area where I live in Jersey mostly gets 2-4 inches of snow that melts usually within a few days. 24-36" of snow in a 24-48 hour period is catastrophic because the average is less than that for an entire season. regardless if it all melts or not many of the affected areas simply aren't prepared for the amount of snow we're going to get. I expect the area to be more or less paralyzed for a couple of days. More if power service is affected. That will be the thing that could cause the most casualties. Not everyone has alternatives for heating if the power goes out. Especially in the city.

Thankfully we're prepared. Our pantry is always well stocked and we won't have to worry about losing heat unless the gas main takes a hit. Since it's buried that isn't likely.

It pisses me off, too, when those pantywaists in California and Wyoming and such rely on federal and state firefighters to fight forest fires to save their lives and property.

Fuck, anyone can cut a fire break with an axe or two. And everyone's got a water hose.

We cannot cut fire breaks! We have endangered kangaroo rats or some bullshit! And goddamn Sea Monkeys!

Heh.

I bought sea monkeys from the back of a comic book. Decades ago.

They weren't much fun.

I'm pretty sure there is a big difference between saying people should stay in, and setting up a curfew with punitive measures backing it.

Stupid people should be allowed to off themselves with their own stupid.....

Yeah, you're right. 50 million people really should have generators and piles of wood stacked up in their one bedroom apartments in the middle of some of the biggest cities in the world.

Nothing about being prepared requires stacks of wood smart ass.

Got 800 families paying 10k a month for their high rise condos? Better have a generator in the bottom of that bitch....if not, stupid mother fuckers.

There is no excuse for being unprepared. If you live in NE or really at elevation/north of the 42nd then you should ALWAYS be ready to ride out a blizzard. Just like if you live in a fucking jungle/rain forest....you should be ready for a monsoon season because DUHHHHHHH!!!

Right....and I'm with him, the stay in or face prosecution is over the fucking top.

Why not just delcair martial law and got to DEFCON 1??FEMA GET THE CAMPS READY!

Usually it takes a natural disaster to declare a state of emergency.

It's a blizzard for sure....but a blizzard is not a mile wide F5 tornado hitting a major city....a 200ft wall of water wiping a coast clean....hurricane leveling/flooding a state.....or an earthquake crushing a city.

All those things kill hundreds if not thousands of people and usually leave tens of thousands homeless. THAT is a fucking emergency....

A blizzard is a risk to morons and an inconvenience worthy of a couple days off for the rest of the sane segment of society.

involving or causing sudden great damage or suffering.
"a catastrophic earthquake"

Right....

When the body count rises over 0.1% or damage hits 11 figures (easy as fuck for a hurricane or half decent tornado) I'll bend over, kiss your ass and profess how fucking wrong I was. No problem.

But I just don't see the disaster happening.

regardless if it all melts or not many of the affected areas simply aren't prepared for the amount of snow we're going to get. I expect the area to be more or less paralyzed for a couple of days.

That's an inconvenience, not a catastrophe, oh master of the most dramatic 1st world problems.

More if power service is affected. That will be the thing that could cause the most casualties. Not everyone has alternatives for heating if the power goes out. Especially in the city.

That's the big one...if power goes down the elderly/crippled could be in a world of suck Oh and don't forget the fucking retards too stupid to stay warm.

Thankfully we're prepared. Our pantry is always well stocked and we won't have to worry about losing heat unless the gas main takes a hit. Since it's buried that isn't likely.

See....I bet in 48 hrs you will be well rested and looking to shovel yourself out just like 99.999999% of those effected by the DEVASTATING CATASTROPHE OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS!!!! you lot are about to endure. LOL

As soon as a blizzard leaves a devastated trail of smoldering ashes where towns/cities once stood you might have a point....

Is that the artistic impression of how devastating this world ender of a storm is going to be?

I can't even find anything on the internet about a blizzard actually destroying a town.....some damage and a hand full of deaths (unless you go back like 100+ years ago).

Why should this one be so much more dangerous/deadly/devastating?

Is there any evidence to suggest this thing is going to level NY or some shit? Am I just missing that little facet of info in all the weather websites?
