So by extending your argument here, police departments are also an excuse for big gov't to tell civil society what to do.

To which my retort would be; Those same laws also grant the chief executives of (pick a jurisdiction size/name) the legal authority to do things like close roads, shut down gov't offices, mobilize necessary personal to deal with an emergency, order curfews, order evacuations, etc, etc, etc.

You only seem to be against using legitimate gov't authority when it benefits anyone but yourself, or more appropriately, when the selective outrage machine you plug yourself into tells you to do so.

Well, I don't know how it is with NY blizzards, but I'm very glad Florida government takes trouble to help us prepare for and get through hurricanes. Saves a lot of lives.

No, we're pretty shit for earthquakes. They are unpredictable and infrequent. It's hard to gin up the necessary fear for them. Honestly our best bet is getting Californians on board with the CDC Zombie Plan which is basically an Earthquake kit with a knife. Then convincing us it's fun to be prepared.

If you don't do it every time you won't do it when it's necessary because as you're admitting we have to wait and see if this storm is "historic" or not.
